as snakes [rush upon] Garuḍa, or bees upon a tree, / so all those Dānavas, seizing excellent weapons, // roaring like great rainclouds, charged at the cool-beamed god. / O Vyāsa, as they charged, the enemy of darkness, smiling as it were, // severed with his arrows on every side their uplifted weapons. / Then that god, filled with wrath, once more pierced // all of them in their hearts with sharp arrows and roared aloud. / And with biting cold, the immutable lord of the stars, // his eyes reddened with rage, struck all the asuras. / Pierced by arrows and severely tormented by the cold, // the Daitya lords stood fixed right there, as if painted on canvas. / And the god Candra too, bending his bow into a circle in battle, // pierced all the Daitya lords, roaring like a cloud. / Whichever Dānava or Daitya, O best of sages, // [came forward,] all of them then bore the arrows of the moon. / Whenever a Daitya moved any limb, // right there the god pierced it with sharp arrows and roared. / Wherever in the battle a Daitya warrior spoke, // Candramas struck eight arrows right into his mouth. / Motionless, all those foremost asuras stood like mutes, / all their limbs pierced by arrows, as if painted on canvas. / Just as the divine lord Candramas was the crusher of the Dānavas, / even so the divine lord Fire tormented the Dānavas in battle.
