kṣutkṣāmakaṇṭhatālvoṣṭhān kaśmalāṃśca mṛdambhasā /
nagnān malinavastrāṃś ca śataśo 'tha sahasraśaḥ //
With their throats, palates, and lips withered by hunger, soiled by muddy water, / naked and with dirty garments, hundreds and thousands [of them],
