uttamaṃ phalamāraṇyaṃ gṛhītvā svayam eva hi /
madhyamaṃ phalamārāmyamadhamaṃ krītam eva ca //
Gathered by oneself, the forest flower yields the best fruit; / the garden flower yields middling fruit; and that which is bought is inferior.

pratigraheṇa yal labdhaṃ niṣphalaṃ tad vidurbudhāḥ /
That which is obtained through acceptance of a gift, the wise know to be fruitless."
