3.2.4.1

Vyāsa said:

3.2.4.2

Henceforth I shall relate the deed of Dharmarāja,

3.2.4.3

hearing which no fear of the messengers of Yama arises anywhere.

3.2.4.4

Dharmarāja beheld her, Vardhanī, the excellent apsaras.

3.2.4.5

'Who is this beautiful-limbed, exceedingly lovely woman in the vast forest?

3.2.4.6

And this is a wilderness devoid of humans, terrifying with lions and tigers.'

3.2.4.7

Recognizing this as a supreme wonder, Dharmarāja spoke these words:

3.2.4.8

Dharmarāja said:

3.2.4.9

'Why, O proud lady, do you wander alone in this deserted forest?

3.2.4.10

From what place have you come, and whose wife are you, O lovely one?

3.2.4.11

Whose daughter are you, O fair-thighed one, so exceedingly beautiful and auspicious?

3.2.4.12

Are you a human, or a gandharva woman, an immortal goddess, or a kiṃnara woman,

3.2.4.13

an apsaras, a bird-maiden, or perhaps a forest deity,

3.2.4.14

a rākṣasī, or a sky-traveler? And whose wife are you? Tell me that!

3.2.4.15

Tell me the truth, O fair-browed one!' the son of Arka said then.

3.2.4.16

'What do you wish for, blessed lady, or what must be done? Speak of it here!

3.2.4.17

Whatever you desire, O fair-thighed one, I shall grant what you wish.'

3.2.4.18

Vardhanī said:

3.2.4.19

'Everything immovable and movable rests upon dharma, O lord.

3.2.4.20

Being that Dharma yourself, why are you performing this difficult practice, O sinless one?'

3.2.4.21

Yama said:

3.2.4.22

'I desire to see the form of Īśāna, O splendid lady;

3.2.4.23

therefore, engaged in austerity, [I wish to see] Śaṃkara along with his auspicious consort Śivā.

3.2.4.24

I shall attain fame, I shall attain happiness, and so I perform this exceedingly difficult task.

3.2.4.25

My thought was: "Let my fame endure age after age;

3.2.4.26

let my fame endure again through eon after eon, and great eon after great eon!"

3.2.4.27

For this reason, O fair-browed lady, supreme austerity is being practiced.

3.2.4.28

Why have you come, O auspicious one? Tell me just as it is!

3.2.4.29

What is the business, and for what reason? You should speak the truth.'

3.2.4.30

Vardhanī said:

3.2.4.31

'By your very austerity, O Dharma, the lord of heaven was struck with fear.

3.2.4.32

By him I have been sent here with the desire to obstruct your tapas.

3.2.4.33

Terrified through fear of losing his throne, by Hari [Indra], in Hari's presence,

3.2.4.34

I was dispatched, O illustrious one. Truly, I speak the truth!"

3.2.4.35

Sūta said:

3.2.4.36

Then, pleased by her truthful words, the son of the Sun,

3.2.4.37

the highly fortunate one, said to her: "I am a granter of boons; ask [a boon] of me!

3.2.4.38

I am Yama to all evil beings who perform bad deeds,

3.2.4.39

yet I am the very embodiment of Dharma to all men of self-control.

3.2.4.40

As that Dharma, O fair-hipped woman, I grant you what is hard to attain;

3.2.4.41

ask all that of me quickly, O best of the apsarases!"

3.2.4.42

Varddhanī said:

3.2.4.43

"Grant me permanent stability in Indra's lovely realm,

3.2.4.44

O lord, O best among the upholders of Dharma, and for the welfare of the worlds!"

3.2.4.45

Yama said:

3.2.4.46

Saying to her, "So be it," he [added]: "Choose another [boon] quickly!

3.2.4.47

I shall grant an excellent boon; I am delighted by your singing."

3.2.4.48

Varddhanī said:

3.2.4.49

"In this place, in this great kṣetra, O highly wise one, let there be a tīrtha belonging to me,

3.2.4.50

destroying all sins, and well known by my name!

3.2.4.51

Whatever is given there, offered in fire, practiced as austerity, or recited, let it be imperishable!

3.2.4.52

Whoever frequents this growing lake for five nights,

3.2.4.53

his ancestors shall be satisfied, being offered water offerings day by day."

3.2.4.54

Saying "So be it" to her, Dharma remained observing silence.

3.2.4.55

Having circumambulated that Dharma three times and bowed to him, she went to heaven.

3.2.4.56

Varddhanī said:

3.2.4.57

"Do not fear, O lord of gods, concerning Yama, the son of the Sun!

3.2.4.58

This Dharma is devoted to his own purpose; he performs [tapas] for renown."

3.2.4.59

Vyāsa said:

3.2.4.60

Varddhanī of fair countenance was honoured by that Śakra:

3.2.4.61

"Well done, well done, O highly fortunate one! You have accomplished the work of the gods!

3.2.4.62

Fearlessness in an excellent home and a happy dwelling shall always be yours;

3.2.4.63

fame, happiness, and charming fortune you will attain, O fair-faced lady!"

3.2.4.64

"So be it," said the gods to her, with minds joyful and fearless.

3.2.4.65

Having bowed to Śakra, she went to her own auspicious dwelling.

3.2.4.66

Sūta said:

3.2.4.67

When the apsaras had gone, O king of kings, Dharma remained according to rule;

3.2.4.68

he performed terrifying tapas, causing agitation to the universe.

3.2.4.69

Performing the discipline of five fires in the month of Jyeṣṭha, heated by the sun,

3.2.4.70

he did what was very hard to endure, O king, unapproachable even for the gods.

3.2.4.71

Then, when a hundred years had elapsed, Antaka, adhering to silence,

3.2.4.72

stood like a piece of wood, [calm] like an elephant in the wind, covered by hundreds of anthills.

3.2.4.73

With various flocks of birds that had built nests on him, that king of Dharma

3.2.4.74

sat there, O king; such a vow is not seen anywhere!

3.2.4.75

Constantly remembering the lord of gods, the blameless consort of Umā,

3.2.4.76

the gods, along with the gandharvas and yakṣas, their minds agitated,

3.2.4.77

went once again to the peak of Kailāsa, into the presence of Śiva.

3.2.4.78

The gods said:

3.2.4.79

"Protect, protect us, O Mahādeva, O Śrīkaṇṭha, O Lord of the universe!

3.2.4.80

Protect us, O Lord of past and future! Protect us, O Bull-bannered Lord!

3.2.4.81

You are compassionate, O Lord of mercy! Make us free from obstacles, O Śaṃkara!"

3.2.4.82

Īśvara said:

3.2.4.83

"By whom have the gods been wronged? Or by whom has your pride been crushed,

3.2.4.84

in the mortal world, in heaven, or among the serpents? Tell me quickly, without delay!

3.2.4.85

With this very trident, or with the skull-topped staff,

3.2.4.86

or indeed with the Pāśupata weapon, I shall slay him in battle!

3.2.4.87

Tell us quickly the reason for your coming here!"

3.2.4.88

The gods said:

3.2.4.89

"O ocean of compassion, O lord of gods, O creator of joy to the world,

3.2.4.90

today there is no fear from humans, nor from serpents, gods, or demons.

3.2.4.91

In the world of mortals, O Mahādeva, the lord of the dead, of huge form,"

3.2.4.92

mortifying himself for his own very terrible purpose—this is certain;

3.2.4.93

having undertaken severe austerity, he is afflicting himself by his own will.

3.2.4.94

Because of this, O Sadāśiva, all of us gods are anxious here.

3.2.4.95

We have come to you for refuge; do whatever you wish.”

3.2.4.96

Sūta said:

3.2.4.97

Hearing the words of the gods, [Śiva], who rides a bull and has a bull on his banner,

3.2.4.98

taking up his weapons and beautiful armor,

3.2.4.99

then went to that place where Dharma was stationed.

3.2.4.100

Īśvara said:

3.2.4.101

“O Dharma, my mind is pleased with this austerity of yours.

3.2.4.102

Choose a boon! Choose a boon! Choose a boon!”—thus he spoke indeed.

3.2.4.103

“Whatever desires you wish for, as they reside in your mind,

3.2.4.104

whatever you ask for, O good one, I grant it to you now.”

3.2.4.105

Sūta said:

3.2.4.106

Seeing the god Maheśvara speaking thus,

3.2.4.107

he arose from the ant-hill, O king, folding his hands together,

3.2.4.108

and praised the lord of the world, the subduer of foes, with pure words.

3.2.4.109

Dharma said:

3.2.4.110

“Homage to you, O Īśvara! Homage to you who possess the form of yoga!

3.2.4.111

Homage to you whose form is splendor! O Nīlakaṇṭha, homage be to you!

3.2.4.112

Homage to you who conform to [the meditation of] those who meditate, reachable through devotion!

3.2.4.113

Homage to you whose form is Brahmā! Homage be to you whose form is Viṣṇu!

3.2.4.114

Homage to the gross, to the subtle, and indeed homage to the atomic form!

3.2.4.115

Homage to you who assume any form at will, the maker of creation, preservation, and dissolution!

3.2.4.116

Homage to the eternal, the gentle, Mṛḍa, and homage to Hari!

3.2.4.117

Homage to you who are the heat, and homage to the maker of coolness!

3.2.4.118

Homage to you whose form is creation! O guardian of the world, homage be to you!

3.2.4.119

Homage to the fierce, the terrible, and homage to your tranquil form!

3.2.4.120

Homage to the endless form, and homage to your cosmic form!

3.2.4.121

Homage to the one whose limbs are smeared with ashes! Homage to you, O Candraśekhara!

3.2.4.122

Homage be to the five-faced one! Homage be to the three-eyed one!

3.2.4.123

Homage to you adorned with serpents, wearing a loincloth!

3.2.4.124

Homage to the destroyer of Andhaka, the remover of Dakṣa’s sin!

3.2.4.125

To you, the consumer of Kāma, O foe of Tripura, homage be to you!

3.2.4.126

And whoever recites these forty names spoken by me,

3.2.4.127

having become pure, at the three junctions of the day, recites or even listens [to them],

3.2.4.128

even a cow-slayer, an ungrateful person, a drinker of liquor, one who defiles the teacher’s bed,

3.2.4.129

a slayer of a brahmin, a stealer of gold, or indeed a husband of a Śūdra woman,

3.2.4.130

a slayer of women and children, a sinner, and a speaker of untruth,

3.2.4.131

one of bad conduct, likewise a thief, and likewise an adulterer,

3.2.4.132

a doer of what should not be done, a betrayer of duties, a hater of brahmins, the lowest of priests—[he is freed from all sins].

3.2.4.133

Sūta said:

3.2.4.134

Having been thus repeatedly praised with many words by the King of Dharma,

3.2.4.135

with great devotion, personally bowing with his head,

3.2.4.136

pleased then, Śambhu spoke to him these auspicious words:

3.2.4.137

“Choose a boon, O illustrious one, whatever is in your heart.”

3.2.4.138

Yama said:

3.2.4.139

“If you are pleased, O lord of gods, showing compassion upon me,

3.2.4.140

grant that, O illustrious one, throughout the three worlds with the moving and unmoving,

3.2.4.141

this place shall become famous in the world by my name,

3.2.4.142

uncuttable and unpierceable, meritorious, destroying sins.

3.2.4.143

Make it your abode, O Mahādeva, if you are pleased with me, O Bhava.”

3.2.4.144

Then, O king, a place equal to Kāśī was granted by Śiva.

3.2.4.145

Having granted that, he spoke again: “Choose another [boon], O best of virtuous beings.”

3.2.4.146

Dharma said:

3.2.4.147

“If you are pleased, O lord of gods, showing compassion upon me,

3.2.4.148

make it so, O illustrious one, throughout the three worlds with the moving and unmoving,

3.2.4.149

that by this boon I shall attain renown age after age.”

3.2.4.150

Īśvara said:

3.2.4.151

“Speak, O Kīnāśa, I shall fulfill all of that which you desire.”

3.2.4.152

Pleased indeed by your austerity, I grant the desired boon."

3.2.4.153

Yama said:

3.2.4.154

"O god, if you grant what is desired by me, then, O Śaṃkara,

3.2.4.155

in this place, this great sacred field, always bear my name.

3.2.4.156

O Maheśvara, act in such a way, O god,

3.2.4.157

that it becomes renowned as Dharmāraṇya in the three worlds, including moving and unmoving beings."

3.2.4.158

Īśvara said:

3.2.4.159

"May this always be renowned as Dharmāraṇya in age after age.

3.2.4.160

Established by your name, O god, it will attain renown.

3.2.4.161

Now, whatever else there may be, I shall do it; speak, dear one."

3.2.4.162

Yama said:

3.2.4.163

"Let there be an excellent sacred ford two yojanas in extent bearing my name,

3.2.4.164

an eternal place of liberation, purifying all embodied beings.

3.2.4.165

Flies, insects, domestic animals, birds, wild beasts, and others,

3.2.4.166

moths, bhūtas, vetālas, piśācas, serpents, and rākṣasas,

3.2.4.167

a woman or a man, who gives up their dear life-breaths

3.2.4.168

in my sacred field named Dharma—let there be eternal liberation [for them]."

3.2.4.169

Saying 'Let it be so,' all the gods, Brahmā and the others,

3.2.4.170

showering rain of flowers, attained supreme joy.

3.2.4.171

Celestial drums sounded, the lords of gandharvas sang,

3.2.4.172

auspicious winds blew, and hosts of apsarases danced.

3.2.4.173

Sūta said:

3.2.4.174

Sadāśiva, pleased indeed by Yama with austerity and devotion,

3.2.4.175

spoke a delightful, fitting, and agreeable speech to the god:

3.2.4.176

"Give me permission, dear one, that I may go swiftly

3.2.4.177

to Kailāsa, best of mountains, out of a desire for the welfare of the gods."

3.2.4.178

Yama said:

3.2.4.179

"It is not proper for you to abandon my place, O Maheśvara.

3.2.4.180

By your word, O god, this place becomes greater than Kailāsa."

3.2.4.181

Śiva said:

3.2.4.182

"You have spoken well and fittingly; my presence here will be with a single portion.

3.2.4.183

O virtuous one, this very pure place of yours has not been abandoned by me.

3.2.4.184

The great liṅga Viśveśvara will exist here under my name."

3.2.4.185

Having spoken thus, Mahādeva disappeared right there.

3.2.4.186

By the word of Śiva, that wondrous liṅga [arose] then and there.

3.2.4.187

Having seen it, the gods there, proclaiming their names accordingly,

3.2.4.188

each fashioned their own liṅga in Dharmāraṇya, best of gods;

3.2.4.189

whichever god's liṅga it was, it was celebrated by his name.

3.2.4.190

Sūta said:

3.2.4.191

The liṅga Dharmeśvara was installed by Dharma and was present.

3.2.4.192

From remembering and worshipping it, one is released from all sins.

3.2.4.193

The Brahman accessible to yogins, dwelling in the hearts of all,

3.2.4.194

remains as his liṅga, established as self-manifest.

3.2.4.195

Having worshipped the Lord of Beings, a person is freed from diseases.

3.2.4.196

Then he made a delightful stepwell of Dharma there.

3.2.4.197

Having gathered water from ten million sacred fords, he released it into the stepwell.

3.2.4.198

The charming nature of the sacred ford of Yama, having performed ritual ablution [there],

3.2.4.199

was for the sake of the ritual ablution of deities and purified seers.

3.2.4.200

Having bathed there and drunk [the water], one is released from all sins.
