Among the gods, You are Indra; among the planets, You are the sun;

among the worlds, You are Satyaloka; among the seas, the Ocean of Milk; (29)

4.21.60

among rivers, You are the river of the gods; among lakes, Lake Mānasa;

4.21.61

You are Himavān among mountains; you are the wish-granting cow among milk cows.

4.21.62

You are gold among minerals, and you are crystal among stones.

4.21.63

You are the blue lotus among blossoms; you are tulasī among plants.

4.21.64

Among all stones worthy of worship, you indeed are the Śālagrāma stone.

4.21.65

Among sacred fields of liberation, you are Kāśī; you are Prayāga among lines of sacred fords.

4.21.66

You are the color white among colors; you are the brahmin among two-footed beings.

4.21.67

You are Garuḍa among the egg-born, O Lord; you are speech in transactions.

4.21.68

You are the form of the Upaniṣads among the Vedas; you are indeed the praṇava among mantras.

4.21.69

You are the syllable 'a' among letters; you bear the form of Soma among sacrificers.

4.21.70

You are fire among those with splendour; you are forbearance among the forbearing.

4.21.71

You are Parjanya among givers; you are the supreme among purifiers.

4.21.72

You are the bow among all weapons; you are the wind among the swift.

4.21.73

You are the mind among the faculties of sense; you are the hand among the fearless.

4.21.74

You indeed are the sky among all-pervading things, and you are the Supreme Self among selves.

4.21.75

You, O Lord, are the twilight worship among all regular duties.

4.21.76

You are the horse sacrifice among sacrifices; you are the gift of fearlessness among gifts.

4.21.77

You are the gain of a son among gains; O, you are spring among seasons!

4.21.78

You are the first among yugas; you indeed are the new-moon day among lunar days.

4.21.79

You are Puṣya in the host of asterisms, [and] the solar transit among all festival days.

4.21.80

You are the Vyatīpāta among planetary yogas; you are indeed the kuśa among grasses.

4.21.81

You are indeed the final emancipation of all striving efforts, O Lord!

4.21.82

Among all thoughts here, you are the righteous thought, O unborn one!

4.21.83

You are the sacred fig among all trees, and the soma vine among creepers.

4.21.84

O, you are breath control among all pure spiritual practices!

4.21.85

Among all liṅgas, you are the illustrious Viśveśvara, the bestower of all.

4.21.86

For you are the wife among friends, you are righteousness among all relatives.

4.21.87

Other than you there is nothing in this world of the moving and unmoving, O Nārāyaṇa!

4.21.88

You alone are mother, you are father, you are son, you are immense wealth;

4.21.89

you alone are the treasure of happiness, you are life-span, the Lord of life.

4.21.90

That [alone] is a true story wherein is your name; that is mind which is offered to you;

4.21.91

that is deed which is truly for your sake; that is austerity which is remembrance of you.

4.21.92

That wealth of the wealthy is pure which is spent for your sake.

4.21.93

That alone is fruitful time in which you are worshipped, O victorious one!

4.21.94

And life is auspicious only so long as you abide in the heart.

4.21.95

Diseases go to complete cessation by partaking of the water from your feet.

4.21.96

Even great sins, O Govinda, acquired across many births,

4.21.97

instantly go to dissolution through chanting 'Vāsudeva!'

4.21.98

Ah, what great delusion of men! Ah, what heedlessness of men!

4.21.99

That having disregarded Vāsudeva, they have exerted effort elsewhere!

4.21.100

This alone is auspiciousness; this alone is the acquisition of wealth;

4.21.101

and this is the fruit of life: chanting the name of Dāmodara.

4.21.102

There is no righteousness higher than Adhokṣaja; there is no goal higher than Nārāyaṇa;

4.21.103

there is no desire other than Keśava; there is no liberation without Hari.

4.21.104

This alone is the supreme loss, this indeed is a dire calamity,

4.21.105

and this is supreme misfortune: that one should not remember Vāsudeva.

4.21.106

What, alas, does worship of Hari not accomplish for men?

4.21.107

It bestows sons, friends, wives, wealth, kingdoms, heaven, and liberation.

4.21.108

It removes evil, destroys diseases, restrains anxieties,

4.21.109

swiftly increases righteousness, and grants every desire of the heart.

4.21.110

Free from dualities, supreme meditation upon the pair of the Lord's feet,

4.21.111

performed even inadvertently by a sinner, brings about supreme welfare for oneself.

4.21.112

Whatever sins sinners have, even those sharing the title of 'great'—

4.21.113

the utterance of Hari's name, accompanied by deeply absorbed contemplation, takes them all away.

4.21.114

Just as a spark of fire burns even if touched by accident,

4.21.115

so Hari's name, having touched the cavity of the lips, takes away evil.

4.21.116

Whoever, having made his mind completely calm in the beloved of Kamalā,

4.21.117

practices contemplation for a moment, Kamalā surely remains steadfast for him.

4.21.118

This alone is supreme righteousness; this alone is supreme austerity;

4.21.119

this alone is the supreme sacred ford: that one drinks water from Viṣṇu's feet.

4.21.120

He who partakes with devotion of your offering, O Person of sacrifice,

4.21.121

by that one of great intellect, the sacrificial cake has surely been enjoyed.

4.21.122

He has taken the final sacrificial bath, and he has been submerged in the water of the Gaṅgā,

4.21.123

that man who takes the water from Viṣṇu's feet into a conch and bathes [with it].

4.21.124

By whomsoever the Śālagrāma stone has been worshipped with tulasī leaves,

4.21.125

he is worshipped with garlands of pārijāta flowers in the abode of the gods.

4.21.126

Be he a brahmin, a kṣatriya, a vaiśya, a śūdra, or even another,

4.21.127

if he is endowed with devotion to Viṣṇu, he should be known as the highest of all.

4.21.128

His body marked with the conch and disc, bearing flower-spikes on his head,

4.21.129

his limbs smeared with gopīcandana—if he is seen, whence could there be sin?

4.21.130

Whoever worships daily twelve Śālagrāma stones,

4.21.131

accompanied by a stone from Dvāravatī, is magnified in Vaikuṇṭha.

4.21.132

In whose house tulasī is worshipped every day,

4.21.133

to that house the servants of Yama never approach.

4.21.134

Whose mouth bears the syllables of Hari's name, whose forehead is marked with gopī clay,

4.21.135

whose chest is adorned with a tulasī garland—the followers of Yama cannot touch him.

4.21.136

Gopī clay, tulasī, a conch, a Śālagrāma along with a disc:

4.21.137

in whose house these five are present, whence could there be fear of sin for him?

4.21.138

Whatever muhūrtas, whatever moments, whatever kāṣṭhās, and whatever twinklings of an eye

4.21.139

have passed without the remembrance of Viṣṇu, in those he has been robbed by Yama.

4.21.140

Where is the two-syllabled name of Hari, blazing like a spark,

4.21.141

and where is the great heap of sins, comparable to cotton?

4.21.142

Govinda, Supreme Bliss, Mukunda, Madhusūdana—

4.21.143

leaving aside [Him], I know no other, worship no other, remember no other.

4.21.144

I bow to none, nor do I praise any, nor do I look upon any here with my eye;

4.21.145

I touch none, nor do I smell, nor do I sing of anyone except Hari.

4.21.146

In water, on land, and in Pātāla, in wind, in fire, on a mountain,

4.21.147

among vidyādharas, asuras, gods, kinnaras, monkeys, and men,

4.21.148

in grass, among women, in stone, in trees, shrubs, and creepers,

4.21.149

everywhere I behold the dark-complexioned body, the chest marked with the Śrīvatsa.

4.21.150

You alone are the resident within the hearts of all, the manifest witness;

4.21.151

without You, outside and inside, I indeed know no other all-pervading one."

4.21.152

Having spoken thus, O Śivaśarman, Dhruva then fell silent.

4.21.153

The god, Lord Viṣṇu, with a gracious look, spoke to him:

4.21.154

The Holy Lord said:

4.21.155

“O child, large-eyed Dhruva, of steadfast mind, sinless one,

4.21.156

the desire abiding in your heart has been fully understood by me.

4.21.157

From food beings arise; from rain is the production of food;

4.21.158

the cause of that rain is the sun. O Dhruva, become the support of the sun!

4.21.159

Of the entire circle of lights, the planets, constellations, and the rest on every side,

4.21.160

wandering constantly in the sky, you shall be the support.

4.21.161

Having become the central pivot [holding] all of them bound by cords of wind,

4.21.162

remain in that place until the end of the kalpa, turning the host of celestial lights.

4.21.163

Formerly, having worshipped the glorious Mahādeva, this position was obtained

4.21.164

by me; that very [position] has now been bestowed upon you by your austerity.

4.21.165

Some remain for four yugas, some for a manvantara, O Dhruva;

4.21.166

but you indeed shall rule over this place for a kalpa.

4.21.167

That which was not attained even by Manu, what to say of other men, O Dhruva?

4.21.168

That place, difficult to attain even for Śakra and others, has been made yours.

4.21.169

Pleased by this hymn of praise, I grant you other boons:

4.21.170

your mother Sunīti also will dwell near you.

4.21.171

Whosoever, concentrated in mind, recites this excellent hymn of praise

4.21.172

at the three junctures of the day, that man's sin will go to destruction.

4.21.173

Lakṣmī will not abandon his dwelling, beyond doubt,

4.21.174

nor will there be separation from a mother, nor the arising of quarrels with kinsmen.

4.21.175

This holy praise of Dhruva destroys great sins;

4.21.176

even the killer of a brahmin is purified—what need to speak of other sinners?

4.21.177

It is the mother of great merit, the bestower of great wealth,

4.21.178

the pacifier of great portents, the destroyer of serious diseases. / Whosoever has supreme devotion to me with a pure mind,

4.21.179

by him this praise of Dhruva, which brings about my pleasure, should be chanted.

4.21.180

Whatever fruit a man obtains by bathing in all the sacred fords,

4.21.181

he fully attains that fruit by chanting with joy this hymn of praise.

4.21.182

There are many hymns of praise that bring me pleasure,

4.21.183

yet they are not worth a sixteenth part of this hymn by Dhruva.

4.21.184

Even upon hearing this hymn of praise with supreme faith and joy, a mortal

4.21.185

is instantly freed from sins and would obtain great merit.

4.21.186

One without a son obtains a son; one without wealth would obtain wealth;

4.21.187

and one lacking devotion obtains devotion from reciting Dhruva's hymn.

4.21.188

The gains a man obtains by giving numerous gifts

4.21.189

and performing diverse vows, he obtains just so through this hymn.

4.21.190

Setting aside all tasks and abandoning numerous mantras to be recited,

4.21.191

this hymn of Dhruva should be recited, which grants all desires."

4.21.192

The Blessed Lord said:

4.21.193

"Dhruva, pay attention; I shall tell you what is beneficial, O large-minded one,

4.21.194

whereby this position of yours shall become completely immovable.

4.21.195

I was indeed desirous of going to the auspicious city of Vārāṇasī,

4.21.196

where Viśveśvara himself dwells, the cause of liberation,

4.21.197

and where Viśveśvara himself into the ear of dying creatures

4.21.198

performs the recitation capable of uprooting all karma.

4.21.199

For this suffering of saṃsāra, which brings about every affliction,

4.21.200

there is only one remedy: the ground of joy that is Kāśī.
