4.53.1

Agasti spoke:

4.53.2

An unprecedented tale of Brahmā has been told, O best of the knowers of Brahman!

4.53.3

What did Śambhu do next, while Brahmā remained there? (1)

4.53.4

Skanda spoke:

4.53.5

Listen, O highly fortunate Agastya, while Brahmā remained in Kāśī,

4.53.6

Giriśa reflected, his mind intensely anxious: (2)

4.53.7

'Such a city as that Kāśī is, a ground of enchantment,

4.53.8

no such place has surely ever been seen anywhere by me! (3)

4.53.9

Whoever goes to that city remains right there;

4.53.10

those unconnected with yoga became followers of yoga when united with Kāśī. (4)

4.53.11

Even the thousand-rayed sun, reaching [there], quickly became completely ineffective.

4.53.12

Even Brahmā, skilled in ritual injunctions, did not come near me!' (5)

4.53.13

Reflecting thus, the Lord of the gods summoned his attendants in great numbers

4.53.14

and sent them forth: 'O you, go swiftly to the city of Vārāṇasī! (6)

4.53.15

What are the yoginīs doing? What is that sun doing?

4.53.16

Go with haste and find out: and what is Brahmā doing?' (7)

4.53.17

He then dispatched them by name, preceded by great respect:

4.53.18

'Śaṅkukarṇa, Mahākāla, Ghaṭākarṇa, Mahodara, (8)

4.53.19

Somanandin, Nandiṣeṇa, Kāla, Piṅgala, Kukkuṭa,

4.53.20

Kuṇḍodara, Mayūrākṣa, Bāṇa, Gokarṇa, Tāraka, (9)

4.53.21

Tilaparṇa, Smṛlakarṇa, Dṛmiciṇḍa, Prabhāmaya,

4.53.22

Sukeśa, Vindate, Chāga, Kapardin, Piṅgalākṣaka, (10)

4.53.23

Vīrabhadra, the one called Kirāta, Caturmukha, Nikumbhaka,

4.53.24

Pañcākṣa, the one called Bhārabhūta, Tryakṣa, Kṣemaka, Lāṅgalin, (11)

4.53.25

Virādha, Sumukha, Āṣāḍha—you are my sons,

4.53.26

just as are these two, Skanda and Heramba, and just as is this Naigameya, (12)

4.53.27

just as are Śākha and Viśākha, and just as are these two, Nandin and Bhṛṅgin.

4.53.28

While you are present, endowed with great valour, (13)

4.53.29

I know nothing of what is happening in Kāśī, nor of King Divodāsa,

4.53.30

nor of the yoginīs, the sun, and Brahmā. Therefore, go, you two from among you, (14)

4.53.31

Śaṅkukarṇa and Mahākāla, who make even Death tremble!

4.53.32

Go endowed with swiftness to learn news of Vārāṇasī.' (15)

4.53.33

Having made their vow, those two swiftly reached the city of Vārāṇasī.

4.53.34

Forgetting the word of Śambhu, Śaṅkukarṇa and Mahākāla— (16)

4.53.35

just as a wise man seeing a magician's illusion in this world

4.53.36

succumbs to bewilderment in an instant, even so did those two upon seeing Kāśī. (17)

4.53.37

Ah, the majesty of delusion! Ah, the reversal of fortune,

4.53.38

since the unwise, having reached Kāśī, the heap of nirvāṇa, go elsewhere! (18)

4.53.39

By those by whom this Kāśī, the ground of great blessings, has been abandoned,

4.53.40

liberation, even though attained in the palm of their hands, has departed on all sides. (19)

4.53.41

Where a mere bath is superior to all concluding sacrifice ablutions,

4.53.42

even with heated waters—who would abandon that Kāśī? (20)

4.53.43

Where, by the offering of a single flower upon the head of a Śiva-liṅga,

4.53.44

the merit of ten gold coins is obtained—who would abandon that Kāśī? (21)

4.53.45

Where, even by a single prostration like a staff before Śiva,

4.53.46

they declare Indra's station to be trifling—who would relinquish that Kāśī? (22)

4.53.47

Where, having fed merely a single twice-born man to his heart's content,

4.53.48

the merit is greater than that of a Vājapeya sacrifice—who would relinquish that Kāśī? (23)

4.53.49

Where, having given a single cow according to the rules to a brahmin,

4.53.50

one obtains the merit of ten thousand cows—what wise person would abandon that Kāśī? (24)

4.53.51

Where, having consecrated a single liṅga, it is as if the entire three worlds

4.53.52

have been established—who would abandon that Kāśī? (25)

4.53.53

Having resolved thus, establishing two merit-bestowing liṅgas,

4.53.54

the two took up residence right there, and do not leave Kāśī even today. (26)

4.53.55

Having seen the liṅga Śaṅkukarṇeśvara, worshipped by the attendant Śaṅkukarṇa,

4.53.56

a creature is never born again in the womb of a mother. (27)

4.53.57

In the north-west direction from Viśveśa, a man having worshipped Śaṅkukarṇeśvara

4.53.58

would not enter into the terrible ocean of saṃsāra in this world. (28)

4.53.59

The liṅga Mahākāleśvara, worshipped by the attendant Mahākāla,

4.53.60

And having worshipped, bowed to, and praised [it], whence could there be any fear of Death? .. 29 ..

4.53.61

Skanda said:

4.53.62

When Śaṅkukarṇa and Mahākāla were delayed for a long time,

4.53.63

the all-knowing Lord, understanding [this], then spoke to two other gaṇas: .. 4.2.53.30 ..

4.53.64

“Ghaṇṭākarṇa, come here! O wise Mahodara!

4.53.65

Go both of you swiftly to Kāśī to find out the doings there.” .. 31 ..

4.53.66

Thus addressed, the two gaṇas went to the great city of Kāśī,

4.53.67

and turning away, they have not returned anywhere even today, but have remained right there. .. 32 ..

4.53.68

Ghaṇṭākarṇa, the best of gaṇas, having properly installed

4.53.69

the liṅga Ghaṇṭākarṇeśvara in Kāśī, was himself blissfully content right there. .. 33 ..

4.53.70

Having established a reservoir right there for the purpose of the ceremonial bath of the liṅga,

4.53.71

he would not leave Kāśī even today, meditating indeed upon the liṅga in the very same way. .. 34 ..

4.53.72

Mahodara too, devoted to meditation on Śiva to the east of it,

4.53.73

would meditate even today upon the liṅga Mahodareśvara, O pot-born [Agastya]! .. 35 ..

4.53.74

Having seen Mahodareśvara in Vārāṇasī, O best of the twice-born,

4.53.75

one will never indeed enter a mother's belly-cave again. .. 36 ..

4.53.76

Having bathed in the pool of Ghaṇṭākarṇa and seen the all-pervading Vyāseśvara,

4.53.77

even if one dies anywhere at all, it is as if he died in Vārāṇasī. .. 37 ..

4.53.78

Having performed a śrāddha according to rule at the great sacred ford Ghaṇṭākarṇa,

4.53.79

one can deliver seven ancestors, even if they have fallen into an evil state. .. 38 ..

4.53.80

Having plunged even today into that pool, whoever becomes attentive for a moment,

4.53.81

he hears the ringing sounds of the bells during the great worship of Viśveśvara. .. 39 ..

4.53.82

The ancestors say: “In Kāśī, in the pure water of Ghaṇṭākarṇa,

4.53.83

may someone be born in our lineage who is a giver of even sesamum-water!” .. 4.2.53.40 ..

4.53.84

Sages whose descendants have performed water-rites at Kāśī in the great pool of Ghaṇṭākarṇa,

4.53.85

have attained supreme perfection, O pot-born [Agastya]! .. 41 ..

4.53.86

Skanda said:

4.53.87

When the gaṇa Ghaṇṭākarṇa had gone and Mahodara had departed,

4.53.88

the enemy of Smara marvelled, shaking his head again and again. .. 42 ..

4.53.89

And Hara said in his mind, smiling again and again:

4.53.90

“O Kāśī, you are the lore of great delusion; I fully comprehend you. .. 43 ..

4.53.91

Those who know the ancient lore praise you as dispelling great delusion;

4.53.92

they do not know Kāśī thus: this is the land of great delusion! .. 44 ..

4.53.93

I will send everyone; you will delude them.

4.53.94

Thus I know well, O Kāśī, that you are an herb of delusion. .. 45 ..

4.53.95

Even so, I will send as much retinue as I have;

4.53.96

the wise do not cease from effort in an action that is to be accomplished. .. 46 ..

4.53.97

No cessation of effort should be made by the discerning in any task;

4.53.98

even adverse fate would be worn down by one's constant exertion. .. 47 ..

4.53.99

The cool-rayed [moon] and the hot-rayed [sun], though seized by Svarbhānu in the courtyard of the sky,

4.53.100

even today do not abandon their course, exerting their effort to advance. .. 48 ..

4.53.101

On the one hand, fate repeatedly destroys undertakings through adversity;

4.53.102

on the other hand, the things to be done here will succeed through great effort. .. 49 ..

4.53.103

Fate is declared to be action done in a previous life, nothing else;

4.53.104

in counteracting that, effort must be made by the wise man himself. .. 4.2.53.50 ..

4.53.105

Food placed in a dish by fate would not enter the mouth on its own;

4.53.106

and by the effort of the hand and the mouth, it can enter the belly-cave.” .. 51 ..

4.53.107

Thus affirming effort, which is certain to conquer fate, the Lord

4.53.108

again sent five gaṇas of great swiftness: .. 52 ..

4.53.109

Somanandī, Nandiṣeṇa, Kāla, Piṅgala, and Kukkuṭa.

4.53.110

Even today they do not return from Kāśī, as if they were living-dead. .. 53 ..

4.53.111

They too, having installed liṅgas under their own names desiring Śambhu's satisfaction,

4.53.112

remained in Kāśī, the birthplace of universal liberation. .. 54 ..

4.53.113

Having seen the supreme liṅga Somanandīśvara in the Nandavana,

4.53.114

a devoted man would attain supreme bliss in the realm of Soma. .. 55 ..

4.53.115

Then, having seen Nandiṣeṇeśvara to the north of it, a man,

4.53.116

obtaining an army of bliss, would conquer even Death in an instant. .. 56 ..

4.53.117

Having bowed to the great liṅga Kāleśvara to the northwest of the Gaṅgā,

4.53.118

one would never be bound by the noose of Death. .. 57 ..

4.53.119

Having worshipped Piṅgaleśvara a little to the north of Kāleśa,

4.53.120

he obtains the tawny knowledge by which he attains identity with him.

4.53.121

Those who show devotion here to the liṅga Kukkuṭeśvara,

4.53.122

which has the form of a hen's egg, do not enter a womb [again].

4.53.123

Skanda said:

4.53.124

When even the five Gaṇas, led by Somanandin, O sage,

4.53.125

had reached Ānandakānana and stayed there, Sthāṇu said:

4.53.126

"If properly considered, this is indeed my own task:

4.53.127

even under this pretext, let these followers of mine remain there.

4.53.128

When the Pramathas have entered, though great in magical power,

4.53.129

I myself have entered Vārāṇasī, without doubt.

4.53.130

In due course I will send whatever retinue is mine;

4.53.131

when all of them have gone there, then I too shall go."

4.53.132

Having so resolved in his heart, the trident-bearing God of gods

4.53.133

then dispatched a group of four Gaṇas among the Pramathas:

4.53.134

Kuṇḍodara, Mayūra by name, Bāṇa, and Gokarṇa.

4.53.135

Resorting to the power of māyā, the Gaṇas entered Kāśī.

4.53.136

Though having tried a hundred means to cause confusion to Divodāsa, / when not even one proved capable, they remained right there.

4.53.137

"By what action is the Lord pleased when there are a hundred transgressions?"

4.53.138

Reflecting thus, they performed the supreme worship of the liṅga:

4.53.139

"When a single liṅga belonging to Śambhu is properly worshipped here according to the rules,

4.53.140

the Three-eyed Lord forgives a hundred transgressions and grants liberation.

4.53.141

Śambhu is not so pleased by sacrifices, gifts, austerities, and observances,

4.53.142

as he is pleased when a liṅga is worshipped once according to the rules.

4.53.143

One who knows the rules for worshipping the liṅga and is ever devoted to worshipping the liṅga

4.53.144

is to be regarded as the Three-eyed Lord himself, even though manifest as a two-eyed human.

4.53.145

Not by the gift of a hundred cows, nor by the gift of a hundred [pieces of] gold,

4.53.146

is that fruit obtained by men which comes from worshipping the liṅga even once.

4.53.147

Not by sacrifices such as the horse sacrifice is that fruit obtained

4.53.148

which mortals obtain through daily worship of the liṅga.

4.53.149

He who, having bathed [the liṅga] according to rule, drinks thrice

4.53.150

the water from the ceremonial bath of the liṅga—his threefold sin is swiftly destroyed here.

4.53.151

He who sprinkles the water from the ceremonial bath of the liṅga upon his head—

4.53.152

the fruit of bathing in the Gaṅgā belongs to him; he becomes free from sin.

4.53.153

He who, seeing a liṅga that has been worshipped, bows down even once,

4.53.154

doubt arises regarding his being bound again in a body.

4.53.155

He who installs a liṅga with devotion is freed from the sin committed in seven births,

4.53.156

of this there is no doubt; purified, he shares in heaven."

4.53.157

Having considered thus, the Gaṇas, in order to pacify their betrayal of their master,

4.53.158

installed liṅgas in Kāśī that shatter even great sins.

4.53.159

Beholding the liṅga Kuṇḍodareśvara near Lolārka,

4.53.160

one is freed from all sins and glorified in Śiva's world.

4.53.161

To the west of the liṅga Kuṇḍodareśvara, on the bank of the Asi,

4.53.162

having worshipped Mayūreśvara, one does not enter a womb.

4.53.163

And to the west of Mayūreśa is the great liṅga Bāṇeśvara;

4.53.164

merely by its darśana, one is freed from all sins.

4.53.165

Having worshipped the great liṅga Gokarṇeśa at the western gate

4.53.166

of the inner sanctuary in Kāśī, one is not overcome by obstacles.

4.53.167

For a devotee of Gokarṇeśvara, at the time of death,

4.53.168

no loss of knowledge occurs wherever he meets his end.

4.53.169

Skanda said:

4.53.170

As these four Gaṇas were delaying, the Lord of Gaṇas

4.53.171

extolled the glory and majesty of that Kāśī:

4.53.172

"By Vaiṣṇava māyā, by which the whole universe is deluded here,

4.53.173

this Kāśī is certainly that [māyā] embodied, the sole enchantress of the world!

4.53.174

Abandoning brothers, wives, son, field, house, and wealth,

4.53.175

and even embracing death, all people serve Kāśī.

4.53.176

Where there is not the slightest fear even of death in Kāśī,

4.53.177

why should the Gaṇas dwelling there fear even me?

4.53.178

Where death is auspicious, where sacred ash is ornament,

4.53.179

where a loincloth is silk—to what can Kāśī be compared?"

4.53.180

Where the beautiful maiden of final liberation chooses a beggar or a prince,

4.53.181

a brahmin or an outcaste, whose ornament is the final end.

4.53.182

Where creatures, dying and attaining the state of liberation,

4.53.183

are not equalled by even a fraction of a crore by the gods, Indra and the rest.

4.53.184

In which Kāśī a creature who has died is revered with great effort

4.53.185

by Brahmā, Nārāyaṇa, and the others, their hands folded upon their heads.

4.53.186

Where, in Kāśī, even in being a corpse a creature does not contract impurity;

4.53.187

therefore I myself personally touch his ear.

4.53.188

The virtuous person who murmurs 'Kāśī, Kāśī' twice or thrice

4.53.189

is purer than all purifying things and great.

4.53.190

He by whom Kāśī is meditated upon in the heart, by whom Kāśī is served here,

4.53.191

by him am I meditated upon in the heart; by him am I served always.

4.53.192

Whatever creature serves Kāśī with an unwavering mind,

4.53.193

him do I always hold in my heart with special care.

4.53.194

Even if unable to dwell there himself, one should settle an inhabitant of the sacred ford;

4.53.195

even if only one, at some expense, he surely shares in the fruit of dwelling there.

4.53.196

Those steadfast ones who dwell in Kāśī, resolved to remain until death,

4.53.197

are to be known as liberated while living; they alone are venerable and worshipful.

4.53.198

Reflecting thus repeatedly upon the virtues of Vārāṇasī, Sthāṇu,

4.53.199

summoning other gaṇas, dispatched them with affection:

4.53.200

“Tāraka, come forward! Go, you of pure mind,
