Sanatkumāra said: / How the mountains previously had their wings severed by Śakra, / that I shall tell you, O Vyāsa; listen to it all in full.
Formerly, when Hiraṇyakaśipu, the lord of the Daityas and Dānavas, / had been slain by Viṣṇu of supreme splendor, who had assumed the body of a lion,
his son, the Daitya Prahrāda, became enraged against Viṣṇu. / His father being killed, that glorious sovereign lord of the great Daityas
performed fierce, great austerity for many thousands of years. / Then the four-faced god [Brahmā], pleased, approached that sovereign of the asuras himself
and said with respect, "I am the granter of boons." / Having bowed, Prahlāda, his limbs burning with rage, remembering the murder of his father,
spoke this to Brahmā who had arrived to grant a boon: / "Lord, if you are pleased and have come granting a boon:
Viṣṇu killed my father, the king, through delusion. / Act so that I may kill that Viṣṇu in battle."
Then Brahmā said to him, Prahlāda, the foremost of asuras: / "Viṣṇu is unconquerable in battle, and immune to being killed by gods and asuras,
by the grace of the god of gods, the creator of the world, Umā's lord [Śiva]. / This boon cannot be granted by me to you, O great asura.
