jñānavṛddhastapobuddho vayovṛddha iti trayaḥ
pūrvaḥ pūrvā'bhivādyaḥ syātpūrvābhāve paraḥ paraḥ

One advanced in knowledge, one advanced in ascetic penance, and one advanced in age—these three: / the former is always to be saluted before the latter; in the absence of the former, the next in order.
