naranārāyaṇāvūcatuḥ |
sāttvikaṃ ca yugaṃ proktaṃ kṛtaṃ tretā ca rājasī |
dvāparastamasā yuktaḥ svayaṃ rājasa ucyate ||

Nara and Nārāyaṇa said: / The Kṛta age is declared to be of the nature of sattva, and the Tretā of rajas; / the Dvāpara is joined with tamas, while itself being declared rājasa.
