Narasiṃhapurāṇa 1.51

tasmiṃs tasmiṃs tu tanmātrā tena tanmātratā smṛtā
tanmātrāṇy aviśeṣāṇi viśeṣāḥ karmaśo 'parāḥ //
In each [successive element] there is its subtle element, hence they are remembered as 'subtle elements';
the subtle elements are non-specific, whereas the others are specific through their functions.
