caturdaśa purā kalpā na mṛtā yeṣu narmadā /
tānahaṃ sampravakṣyāmi devī prāha yathā mama //
There were fourteen kalpas in the past in which the Narmadā did not perish; / I shall speak of them fully, just as the goddess told me.
