śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca:
ādau kṛtayuge tāta devadevo maheśvaraḥ /
tapaścacāra vipulaṃ gaṅgāsāgarasaṃsthitaḥ //
Śrī Mārkaṇḍeya said: / In the beginning, in the Kṛta age, O dear one, Maheśvara, the God of Gods, / performed extensive asceticism while staying at the confluence of the Gaṅgā and the ocean.
