mārkaṇḍeya uvāca:
āgneyaṃ bhasmanā snānamavagāhya ca vāruṇam /
āpohiṣṭheti ca brāhmyaṃ vāyavyaṃ gorajaḥ smṛtam //
Mārkaṇḍeya said: / The fiery bath is with sacred ash, and the watery is by immersion; / the Vedic is with the chant 'āpo hi ṣṭhā', and the airy is considered to be the dust from cows.
