brāhmaṇā vedavidvāṃsaḥ kṣatriyā rājyapālakāḥ /
vaiśyā vṛttiratāstatra śūdrāḥ śuśrūṣakāstriṣu //
There were brāhmaṇas learned in the Vedas, kṣatriyas who were protectors of the realm, / vaiśyas engaged in their occupations, and śūdras serving the three [other classes].
