janitā copanetā ca yastu vidyāṃ prayacchati /
annadātā bhayatrātā pañcaite pitaraḥ smṛtāḥ //
The progenitor, the one who performs the sacred thread ceremony, the one who gives knowledge, / the giver of food, and the protector from fear—these five are traditionally regarded as fathers."
