yudhiṣṭhira uvāca:
kāverīti ca vikhyātā triṣu lokeṣu sattama /
māhātmyaṃ śrotum icchāmi tasyā mārkaṇḍa tattvataḥ //

Yudhiṣṭhira said: / O best of beings, renowned in the three worlds is the Kāverī; / I wish to hear truly of her glorification, O Mārkaṇḍeya.
