śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca:
atraivodāharantīmam itihāsaṃ purātanam /
kailāse pṛcchate bhaktyā ṣaṇmukhāya śivoditam //

Śrī Mārkaṇḍeya said: / In this very connection they recount this ancient historical account, / spoken by Śiva on Kailāsa to the six-faced [Skanda] who asked with devotion.
