139.1

The venerable Mārkaṇḍeya said: / Then one should go, O great king, to the unsurpassed Somatīrtha, / where Soma, having performed ascetic penance, entered upon the path of the constellations.

139.2

Whoever bathes in that pilgrimage place, performs sipping of water according to rule, / finishes his recitation, and meditates on Ravi—hear the fruit of his religious merit!

139.3

Whatever fruit is declared for someone reciting the Ṛgveda, the Yajurveda, / and the Sāmaveda, O Bhārata, that very fruit is attained here through the Gāyatrī.

139.4

Whoever, being pure, feeds Brāhmaṇas with devotion at that pilgrimage place, / ten million [Brāhmaṇas] are properly fed by him according to that rule.

139.5

Whoever gives wooden slippers, shoes, an umbrella, / garments, a blanket, and horses to an eminent Brāhmaṇa—his [gift] is equal to ten million.

139.6

If one feeds a thousand thousands of those who do not know the Ṛc verses, / it is not worth a sixteenth part of [feeding] a single one possessed of mantras.

139.7

One should thus feed there a master of the Ṛgveda who has mastered the Veda, / versed in a recension, or an Adhvaryu priest, or a Chāndoga who has completed his study.

139.8

Whatever fruit of a thousand Agnihotra sacrifices is obtained by the wise, / that same fruit is obtained at Somatīrtha through [feeding] a knower of the Veda.

139.9

A man who feeds a hundred of them obtains [the fruit of feeding] a thousand; / wise poets know that this is the fruit of [feeding] a single one devoted to yoga.

139.10

Wherever a sage dwells, having restrained the collection of his senses, / there is Kurukṣetra, Naimiṣa, and the Puṣkaras.

139.11

Therefore, with every effort, during an eclipse of the moon or sun, / at a solar transit (saṃkrānti) and at a vyatīpāta, a yogin especially should be fed.

139.12

Whoever renounces the world at that pilgrimage place, O Yudhiṣṭhira,
that person goes to heaven in a celestial chariot, O fortunate one.

139.13

Becoming a companion of Soma, he rejoices with him.

139.13.p1

|| Thus ends the one hundred and thirty-ninth chapter, entitled 'Description of the Glorification of Somatīrtha', in the Revākhaṇḍa of the fifth book, the Āvantyakhaṇḍa, in the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa consisting of eighty-one thousand verses.
