149.1
The venerable Mārkaṇḍeya said: / Immediately following that is the pilgrimage place celebrated as Liṅgeśvara, / where sin is destroyed from the mere sight of the god of gods.
149.2
Having wrought terrible slaughter among the Dānavas, O Yudhiṣṭhira, / having assumed the form of a boar, he remained at the Narmadā.
149.3
One who takes a sacred bath in that pilgrimage place and bows to the god / is freed, O best of kings, from great sins committed in the past.
149.4
Having fasted on the twelfth day of the dark fortnight and of the bright [fortnight], / he should worship the Lord of the Universe with fragrances and garlands, O son of Pāṇḍu,
149.5
and [he should worship] the brāhmaṇas, O fortunate one, with gifts, honors, and food / with supreme devotion. Listen to the fruit of his religious merit:
149.6
A creature obtains the fruit of performing a sacrificial session over twelve years; / feeding the brāhmaṇas there, he obtains that very same fruit.
149.7
Having offered libations to the ancestors and the gods after bathing, his mind fixed on him, / he should repeat the twelve names while standing before the god.
149.8
Fasting month after month on the twelfth day, O son of Kuru, / the wise man should continually worship Keśava in the month of Mārgaśīrṣa,
149.9
the god Nārāyaṇa in Pauṣa, Mādhava in the month of Māgha, / Govinda in the month of Phālguna, and Viṣṇu in Caitra.
149.10
In Vaiśākha, the slayer of Madhu; in Jyeṣṭha, the god Trivikrama; / in Āṣāḍha, likewise Vāmana; and in Śrāvaṇa, he should remember Śrīdhara.
149.11
Praising Hṛṣīkeśa in Bhādrapada, Padmanābha likewise in Āśvina, / and Dāmodara in Kārttika, he never languishes.
149.12
The vocal, mental, and action-born sin committed in the past / is destroyed—there is no doubt—by chanting the names of the months.
149.13
Himself constantly impelled, blinking his eyes open and shut, / watching intently while eating, he should utter what is devoid of mantras.
149.14
Even for a creature fallen into the greatest distress, this is the remedy: / chanting the month-names of Viṣṇu, the lord of the months.
149.15
Those nights, those days, those months, and those years / are fruitful for men in which the Blessed Lord Hari is contemplated.
149.16
Even when fallen into the greatest distress, he from whose heart-lotus the god Janārdana / does not depart is a yogin; of this there is no doubt.
149.17
Those men are devoid of fortune, truly pitiable; their descent was made [only] to burden the earth; / they are senseless, equal to beasts, who are devoid of devotion to the boundless Blessed Lord.
149.18
Those men on earth have fulfilled their purpose; by the fall of their own limbs they purify the world; / they are discerning, ornaments of the universe, who are endowed with devotion to the boundless Blessed Lord.
149.19
He alone is virtuous; by him the fruit of the tree of birth is attained, / in whose mind, speech, and body the god Janārdana resides.
149.20
This is an excellent, holy pilgrimage place where Janārdana is a liṅga, / having deceived his foes in battle, becoming the eternal wrath.
149.21
During an eclipse of the moon and of the sun, and indeed on the aṣṭakās and during the two solstices, / a restrained man should offer even water mixed with sesame seeds here to the ancestors.
149.22
May Hari the Boar be for your peace—he whose snout opened the multitude of chasms in Meru; who is the raft for those sinking in the ocean of sorrow; whose hooves were half-submerged in the great mud of the womb of the netherworld that had appeared; and whose body became rigid as his ears caught the trumpeting of the quarter-elephants shattered by the wind stirred by his snorts.
