151.1
Śrī Mārkaṇḍeya said:
On the northern bank of the Narmadā is a most splendid pilgrimage place,
the glorification of Jayavārāha, which destroys all sins.
151.2
He by whom the earth was lifted up, who is revered by all the gods,
remains seated on the bank of the Narmadā out of a desire to show grace to the worlds.
151.3
Whoever, having bathed at that pilgrimage place, gazes upon Madhusūdana,
is freed from all sins by proclaiming his ten births.
151.4
Fish, Tortoise, Boar, Man-Lion, and Dwarf,
Rāma, Rāma, and Kṛṣṇa, Buddha, and Kalki—these are the ten.
151.5
Yudhiṣṭhira said:
What was done by the Fish, O father? By the Tortoise, O best of sages?
What deed by the Boar, and what was done by the Man-Lion?
151.6
What was done by the Dwarf, by Rāma, and by the descendant of Raghu?
Or what was done in the form of Buddha, and what by Kalki? Tell [me].
151.7
Thus addressed by the wise son of Dharma, the best of brahmins
then spoke sweet words to the son of Dharma:
151.8
Śrī Mārkaṇḍeya said:
Having become a fish in a former kalpa to please Brahmā, the Lord,
lifting up the Vedas that were submerged in the great ocean, restored them.
151.9
At the production of the nectar, O king, the Guru of the universe, having become a tortoise,
supported Mount Mandara as well as the goddess Earth.
151.10
Having assumed the form of a boar, the god of gods, Janārdana,
lifted up the earth that was submerged and dwelling at the bottom of the netherworld.
151.11
Having made half his body a man and half his body a lion,
he tore open the chest of Hiraṇyakaśipu with the hooks of his claws.
151.12
Wearing matted hair in the form of a dwarf, praised by the best of the twice-born,
having assumed that divine form and measured the earth with his strides,
151.13
he afterwards made Bali a dweller at the bottom of the netherworld;
and having re-established all the gods, Viṣṇu went to his own abode.
151.14
Becoming Rāma, the son of Jamadagni, the best among bearers of weapons,
he killed the kṣatriya protectors of the earth, beginning with the Haihayas.
151.15
Having given the earth with its mountains, forests, and mines to Kaśyapa,
the lord of gods performs austerity on Mount Mahendra even today, O Bhārata.
151.16
Then Rāma, son of Daśaratha, having slain in battle Rāvaṇa, the thorn of the gods,
along with his host, and having given the kingdom to Vibhīṣaṇa,
151.17
having ruled the earth with justice and gratified the deities with sacrifices,
the lotus-eyed Rāma of great splendor went to heaven.
151.18
Again, in the house of Vasudeva, accompanied by Saṃkarṣaṇa,
the Lord of the universe, Vāsudeva, descended, O Yudhiṣṭhira.
151.19
He slew [them] through your power for the sake of slaying wicked kings— / Cāṇūra, Kaṃsa, and Keśin, and Jarāsaṃdha, O Bhārata.
151.20
With him as your noble ally, having slain your enemies, O ruler of men, / you, along with your brothers, will enjoy the whole replenished earth.
151.21
Likewise, Acyuta will attain another, ninth, form as the Buddha, / peaceful, the lord of the gods of gods, slayer of Madhu, lover of sweetness.
151.22
By that god, the supreme lord in the form of the Buddha, / the entire world, moving and unmoving, will be deluded.
151.23
From that time forth, O Bhārata, sons will not listen to their father, / nor relatives [or] pupils to their guru; the inferior will become the superior.
151.24
Dharma is conquered by adharma, and truth is conquered by falsehood; / kings are conquered by thieves, and men are conquered by women.
151.25
The fire offerings languish, worship of the guru is lost, / and human duties decline when the Kali age arrives, O Yudhiṣṭhira.
151.26
In the twelfth or tenth year a woman becomes pregnant; / daughters are born there, and the brāhmaṇa is tawny and reddish.
151.27
Then the lord will become Kalki in his tenth birth.
151.28
This cause of the ten births of the supreme lord god, / which destroys all sins, has been told to you, O king.
