154.1

Śrī Mārkaṇḍeya said:
On the southern bank of the Narmadā is the pilgrimage place Kalakaleśvara,
famous in all the worlds, fashioned by the god himself.

154.2

Having slain Andhaka in battle, the god of gods, Maheśvara, / accompanied by gods, gandharvas, kinnaras, and great serpents,

154.3

amidst the sounds of conches and musical instruments, mṛdaṅgas, paṇavas, and the like, / with the notes of lutes and flutes, and other abundant praises,

154.4

[where] some sing the Sāman hymns, others the Yajus formulas, others recite meters and chant the Ṛg verses, / and others of great majesty praise Maheśvara there with manifold hymns—

154.5

because the liṅga was established amidst the roar of the pramathas and the clamor of the bards, / it became known by that name [Kalakaleśvara].

154.6

That person on earth who bathes at that pilgrimage place and gazes upon Kalakaleśvara / obtains religious merit greater than a Vājapeya sacrifice.

154.7

Purified in self by that religious merit, upon giving up his life-breaths he goes to heaven; / mounted upon an excellent vehicle, he is sung of by hosts of apsarases.

154.8

Having enjoyed great pleasures for a long time, then / that great-souled one is born in the mortal world in an immaculate family,

154.9

a fortunate brāhmaṇa in the world, versed in the Vedas and Vedāṅgas; / freed from disease and grief, he lives for a hundred autumns.
