174.1

Glorious Mārkaṇḍeya said: / Then one should go to Gopeśvara on the northern bank of the Narmadā, / where by a single sacred bath mortals are freed from sins.

174.2

One who bathes at that pilgrimage place and gives up his life / goes to Śiva’s abode on a chariot yoked with peacocks.

174.3

Having sported for a very long time in the world of Śiva, O ruler of men, / attaining human birth here, he becomes a mighty king.

174.4

Endowed with elephants, horses, and chariots, accompanied by female and male servants, / and honoured by rulers of men, a man would live for a hundred years.

174.5

When the month of Kārttika arrives, on the ninth day of the bright fortnight, / fasting and having become pure, one should offer lamps there.

174.6

Having worshipped with perfumes and flowers, one should keep a vigil at night. / Listen, O ruler of men, to the fruit that is prescribed for that:

174.7

As great as the meritorious fruit is, and equal to the number of lamps, / for that many thousands of yugas he is glorified in the world of Śiva.

174.8

At that pilgrimage place, O best of kings, the rite of filling the liṅga / likewise with lotuses and with curds and rice—

174.9

listen, O best of men, to the fruit of religious merit for him who performs it: / as many as the number of sesamum seeds, and likewise [grains of] curds and rice,

174.10

and the number of lotuses, [for that long] he rejoices in the world of Śiva for the desired time. / Whatever is given at that pilgrimage place, O best of kings, O ruler,

174.11

all of that becomes multiplied ten-millionfold; it cannot even be counted. / Thus has all been told to you, peerless among all pilgrimage places.
