179.1
Mārkaṇḍeya said: / Then one should proceed, O king of kings, to the excellent Gautameśvara, / a pilgrimage place that removes all sins and is renowned in the three worlds.
179.2
Austerities were performed by Gautama at that pilgrimage place, O Yudhiṣṭhira, / for a celestial thousand years; then Maheśvara was pleased.
179.3
Bowing with his head, he installed the Supreme Lord there. / Installed by Gautama, the Lord is called Gautameśvara.
179.4
There, having worshiped the Supreme Lord, the gods, Gandharvas, / ṛṣis, and pitṛs have indeed attained the highest perfection.
179.5
A man who bathes in that pilgrimage place and worships the pitṛs and deities, / and worships the Supreme Īśāna, is freed from all sins.
179.6
Many do not know that, deluded by Viṣṇu's māyā, / [namely] that the god Maheśvara, holding a trident in his hand, is present there.
179.7
Having become a celibate student, O ruler of men, he who / bathes in that pilgrimage place and worships Mahādeva obtains the fruit of a horse sacrifice.
179.8
Having become a celibate student, he who offers libations to the pitṛs and deities / and worships the Supreme Īśāna is freed from all sins.
179.9
Whatever gift a man gives with devotion to a twice-born at that pilgrimage place / has wholly inexhaustible fruit; no doubt should be entertained here.
179.10
And in the month of Āśvayuja, O king, on the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight, / having bathed there according to rule, one should offer a hundred lamps.
179.11
Having worshiped Mahādeva with fragrances, flowers, and the like, a man / is freed from all sins and, upon dying, goes to the city of Śiva.
179.12
And on the eighth and fourteenth days, especially on the full moon of Kārttika, / having fasted and become restrained, one should bathe Śiva with clarified butter,
179.13
with the five products of the cow, with honey, curd, or cool water; / and that man attains the fruit of every sacrifice.
179.14
He should then worship with devotion; he will attain the highest fruit: / with unbroken bilva leaves, flowers from the datura plant,
179.15
accompanied by kuśa grass and apāmārga, with [flowers] from the kadamba and droṇa plants as well, / and with jasmine and oleander, red and yellow, white and black,
179.16
with other flowers as available, the man who worships Śiva / and continuously worships Gautameśvara for six months / obtains all desires and, upon dying, goes to the city of Śiva.
