23.1

Mārkaṇḍeya said: / At that very confluence, O king, those mortals who abandon their life-breaths with supreme devotion, / O protector of men, attain the highest state.

23.2

One who, having renounced all intention, abandons his life-breaths, / having reached Amareśvara, would dwell permanently in heaven.

23.3

A man who, having approached the lord of mountains, gives up himself, / would go to Amarāvatī on an aerial chariot of sun-like splendour.

23.4

Beholding a man falling from the mountain Amarakaṇṭaka, / all the apsarases say: 'May he become my husband!'

23.5

Those who know dharma say the waters of Sarasvatī and Gaṅgā are equal; the enlightened say this. / Those who know that matter proclaim the water of Revā to be superior to that; there is no doubt about this.

23.6

Inhabited by many Vidyādharas, Kinnaras, and others, whose dwellings are most meritorious, / for one carrying the water of Revā on his head, a place is indeed near the lord of the chiefs of gods.

23.7

The Narmadā should always be resorted to; what is the use of much talk, O king? / If one desires not to see again the terrible ocean of cyclic existence,

23.8

She is remembered as the great purifier of even the three worlds. / Even for one who has died anywhere [on her banks], the destination belonging to the lords of the Gaṇas is certain.

23.9

Her body is surrounded by many sacrificial grounds; indeed, there is nothing here that is not a pilgrimage place. / What has been stated by you on her bank, whether ascetics or non-ascetics,

23.10

Those men who do evil, when they die, go to heaven like chiefs of immortals.

23.11

Thus the Kapilā and the Viśalyā, O best of kings, / were created in ancient times by Īśvara through the desire for the welfare of the worlds.

23.12

Having bathed there, O king, fasting and with senses conquered, / a man without doubt obtains the fruit of a great horse sacrifice.

23.13

And one who would undertake fasting unto death at that pilgrimage place, O ruler of men, / freed from all sins, goes indeed to the abode of Śiva.

23.14

Whatever fruit is gained on earth up to the ocean by sacred bath and gift, / one obtains that fruit by bathing just once at the confluence of the Viśalyā.

23.15

Thus the auspicious and purifying [river] has been related to you, O king. / And whatever you ask me further, I will also tell you that.

23.15.p1

|| Thus ends the twenty-third chapter, named 'Description of the Glorification of the Confluence of the Viśalyā', in the Revākhaṇḍa, in the fifth Avantyakhaṇḍa, in the glorious Skandapurāṇa of eighty-one thousand verses.
