231.1

The venerable Sūta said: / In that very manner I shall tell of the clusters of pilgrimage places, O best of sages, / by which the stringing of the series of pilgrimage places was made into a single whole by those previously mentioned;

231.2

divided, bestowing the spread of joy upon devoted folk, auspicious, / just as Mṛkaṇḍu's son formerly declared it to the questioning Pārtha.

231.3

Even so shall I describe here the clusters of pilgrimage places. / The sacred Revā, born of the drinking of Śiva's water, is indeed a wish-granting vine;

231.4

it blossoms with the flowers of pilgrimage places produced on both banks, auspicious, / through the beauty of whose sacred fragrance the three worlds are made fragrant.

231.5

The sage Mārkaṇḍa, foremost among the wise, / is verily the bee, the best knower of relishing the taste of that flower's nectar.

231.6

The sage, the uplifter of the race of Bhṛgu, ever wears upon his heart / that sacred garland of flowers adorned with clusters of pilgrimage places. / I shall describe the disposition of its clusters, O best of sages.

231.7

Beginning from the pilgrimage place of Oṅkāra as far as the western sea, / there are thirty-five sin-destroying confluences of rivers:

231.8

eleven on the northern bank and twenty-three on the southern; / the thirty-fifth, the best, is the confluence of the Revā and the ocean.

231.9

Together with the confluences, on both banks of the Revā, / there are thus four hundred well-known pilgrimage places, O best of the twice-born.

231.10

Three hundred pilgrimage places belong to Śiva, together with thirty-three; / there too I shall state them individually; listen to them, O best of men!

231.11

Among them, O lords of sages, the pilgrimage places of Mārkaṇḍeśvara are ten; / ten arise from Āditya, and precisely nine are Kapileśvaras;

231.12

eight were established by Soma, and just as many are Narmadeśvaras; / there are eight Koṭītīrthas, and likewise seven Siddheśvaras;

231.13

and on both banks of the Revā there are precisely seven Nāgeśvaras; / precisely seven were established by Vahni, and likewise a group of seven Āvartas;

231.14

five are pilgrimage places of Kedāreśvara, and five are born of Indra; / five are Varuṇeśas, and five are Dhanadeśvaras;

231.15

the Devatīrthas are five, and there are four Yameśvaras; / four are Vaidyanāthas, and four are Vānareśvaras;

231.16

the pilgrimage places of Aṅgāreśvara are just as many, O lords of sages; / four belong to Sarasvatī, and four are Dārukeśvaras;

231.17

three are Gautameśvara pilgrimage places, three are Rāmeśvaras; / three are Kapāleśvara pilgrimage places, and three are made by Haṃsa;

231.18

The sage declared twenty-eight pilgrimage places dedicated to Viṣṇu; / among them, O best of sages, precisely six are Vārāha pilgrimage places;

231.19

three are known as Bhīmeśvaras, and three are Svarṇatīrthas; / two Dhautapāpas are declared, and likewise two Karañjeśas;

231.20

two Ṛṇamocana pilgrimage places, and likewise two Skandeśvaras; / two Daśāśvamedha pilgrimage places, and two Nandītīrthas, O twice-born;

231.21

two Manmatheśas, and likewise two Bhṛgutīrthas; / two Parāśareśvaras, and two Ayonīsaṃbhavas;

231.22

two Vyāseśvaras are declared, and likewise two Pitṛtīrthas; / two are the pilgrimage places of Nandikeśvara, and two are remembered as Gopeśvaras;

231.23

likewise two Māruteśas, and two are remembered as Jvāleśvaras; / two sacred Śuklatīrthas, and likewise two Apsareśas;

231.24

two Pippaleśvara pilgrimage places named Māṇḍavyeśvara; / and likewise the uplifter of the race of Bhṛgu proclaimed two Dvīpeśvaras; / two Uttareśvara pilgrimage places, and likewise two Aśokeśas;

231.25

and two in Yodhanapura, a pair of Rohiṇītīrthas; / two Luṅkeśvaras are celebrated in the account by the sage.

231.26

One hundred and nineteen pilgrimage places are taken one by one, O twice-born; / formed into clusters, the pilgrimage places are two hundred and fourteen.

231.27

These are the Śaiva pilgrimage places; now listen, O best of men, / to those dedicated to Viṣṇu, Brahmā, and the Śaktis, being declared in order.

231.28

The sage proclaimed twenty-eight pilgrimage places sacred to Viṣṇu; / among them, O best of sages, exactly six are pilgrimage places dedicated to Varāha.

231.29

four are Cakra pilgrimage places, and the remaining eighteen / are presided over by Viṣṇu, as Mṛkaṇḍu's son declared long ago.

231.30

Likewise, he spoke of seven pilgrimage places [established] by Brahmā for the sake of accomplishment: / in three is the worship of Brahmā, and four others are Brahmeśas. / Twenty-eight have been declared by me according to number and order.

231.31

This is incomparable purification; indeed, this is the supreme remover of sin: / the sacred deeds of the Narmadā, the glorification spoken by the sage.

231.32

Sūta said: / Thus has the succession of the Revā's pilgrimage places been stated by me in brief, / just as the sage Mārkaṇḍa told it in concise form to Pārtha.

231.33

Subordinate pilgrimage places are hidden among them in great numbers; / hear about them, O sinless ones, where and of what extent they are.

231.34

Around the pilgrimage place of Oṅkāra, [extending] from Mount Amarakaṇṭaka / for two krośas in all directions, [the count] is considered to be three and a half crores,

231.35

by count of pilgrimage places hidden and revealed, O best of the twice-born; / while at the confluence of the Kapilā there is separately one crore of pilgrimage places;

231.36

at the Aśokavanikā one hundred thousand pilgrimage places are established; / and a hundred at the confluence of the Aṅgāragartā, O best of sages.

231.37

Likewise, ten thousand pilgrimage places are situated at the confluence of the Kubjā; / a hundred are located at the confluence of the Hiraṇyagarbhā.

231.38

Sixty-eight pilgrimage places are located at the confluence of the Viśokā; / likewise, a thousand pilgrimage places are situated at the confluence of the Vāgu.

231.39

A hundred [are] at the confluence of the Sarasvatī, two hundred at Śuklatīrtha; / a thousand at the pilgrimage places of Viṣṇu, and ten thousand at Māhiṣmatī.

231.40

At Śūlabheda, O twice-born, more than one hundred thousand pilgrimage places are situated; / and at Devagrāma, the sage declared a thousand pilgrimage places.

231.41

At Luṅkeśvara, more than seven hundred pilgrimage places are situated; / one hundred and eight pilgrimage places are at the confluence of the Maṇinadī; / and at Vaidyanātha they know of one hundred and eight pilgrimage places.

231.42

Such is the measure [of pilgrimage places] at the Kumbheśvara pilgrimage place, O twice-born; / and more than one hundred thousand pilgrimage places are situated at the confluence of the Revā and the Urā.

231.43

There may even be more than that—thus spoke Mārkaṇḍeya. / And eighty-eight thousand [pilgrimage places] resort to Vyāsadvīpa.

231.44

At the confluence of the Karañjā are situated ten thousand and eight; / likewise, at the confluence of the Eraṇḍī there are one hundred and eight pilgrimage places.

231.45

At Dhūtapāpa sixty-eight pilgrimage places are situated; / at Skandatīrtha, the sage stated there are a hundred meritorious pilgrimage places.

231.46

At Kohaneśa sixty-eight pilgrimage places are situated; / and fifteen million pilgrimage places are indeed situated at Korilāpura.

231.47

At Rāmakeśavatīrtha he declared more than a thousand; / and at Asmāhaka a thousand pilgrimage places indeed reside.

231.48

Eight hundred and two thousand pilgrimage places at Śuklatīrtha, O best of the twice-born, / the descendant of Bhṛgu proclaimed of old to the son of Pṛthā.

231.49

He spoke of one hundred and eight at each of the confluences / of the remaining rivers, except the confluence of the Kāverī.

231.50

At the confluence of the Kāverī, O brāhmaṇas, five hundred are situated likewise; / and the sage mentioned a particular [merit] of the pilgrimage places on festive days.

231.51

The virtuous indeed call it Mokṣatīrtha, resorted to by ancient sages; / and in the sacred field of Bhṛgu, ten million pilgrimage places have taken refuge.

231.52

Who indeed would be able to speak of those that exceed that, O best of ṛṣis? / It is declared to be the refuge of all the gods, and likewise the refuge of all pilgrimage places,

231.53

renowned in the three worlds, worshipped, the granter of accomplishments. / And at Bhārabhūti one hundred and eight pilgrimage places are situated.

231.54

At the pilgrimage place of Akrūreśvara one hundred and fifty pilgrimage places are situated; / while at the pilgrimage place of Vimaleśvara, at the confluence of the Revā and the ocean, / the sage declared more than one hundred thousand pilgrimage places.
