86.1
Glorious Mārkaṇḍeya said: / Then one should go, O great king, to the excellent Piṅgalāvarta / situated near the confluence on the northern bank of the Revā. / Piṅgaleśvara was established [there] by the fire-god, O chief of kings.
86.2
Yudhiṣṭhira said: / How was Īśvara established by the carrier of oblations, O Blessed One? / Tell me all this; you ought to speak out of grace.
86.3
Mārkaṇḍeya said: / The carrier of oblations, O king, was satiated with the semen of Śambhu, / the fierce one who had attained delight, whose mind was sporting with Gaurī.
86.4
Cast into the mouth of the carrier of oblations by Rudra of boundless splendour, / burned by the semen of Rudra, [Agni] undertook a pilgrimage to holy places.
86.5
Having gone to oceans and rivers, he reached the Revā in due course. / The consumer of oblations practiced fierce meditation with supreme devotion.
86.6
As the consumer of oblations, living on wind, performed penance for a full hundred [years], / Mahādeva, the granter of boons, was pleased with the all-knower of beings, / and having approached his presence, spoke this word:
86.7
Īśvara said: / Choose a boon, O consumer of oblations, whatever is in your mind!
86.8
The fire-god said: / Homage to you, O Lord of all worlds! Homage to you of fierce form! / Burned by your semen, I have become a leper, O Maheśvara. / Have mercy, O Mahādeva, and destroy my disease!
86.9
Īśvara said: / O carrier of oblations, become free from disease quickly by my grace! / Having bathed in this pilgrimage place, you will regain your own natural form.
86.10
Having spoken thus, Mahādeva disappeared right there. / Thereupon, the carrier of oblations quickly bathed in the water of the Revā.
86.11
At that very moment, he became free from disease and endowed with a divine form. / That fire-god established the lord of gods, Piṅgaleśvara;
86.12
he worshipped him by name and praised him with praises joyfully. / Then the carrier of oblations went to his own realm among the gods.
86.13
Thus was Piṅgaleśvara established by the carrier of oblations, O king. / Whoever, with anger conquered, observes a fast there,
86.14
his is the fruit of an Atirātra sacrifice, and in the end he attains the state of Rudra. / To a Brahmin endowed with virtues, [who gives] a brown cow there, O Bhārata—
86.15
Having adorned [a cow] together with her calf, decorated with ornaments according to one's means, / whoever presents [her], O king of kings, goes to the supreme state.
86.15.p1
