one only, without a second. It saw: it created fire; that created water; those created food." Or because of having three forms such as fire, since an effect does not exist apart from its cause, and from the scripture: "A modification is merely a handle for speech, a name; clay alone is the truth; such, my dear, is the instruction." Likewise, because of existing prior to the three worlds, or having their form; thus because of existing prior to the three Vedas, or having their three forms; because of existing prior to the three gods, or having their form; because of existing prior to the sun, fire, and moon, or having their form; because of existing prior to the three [factors] beginning with the cognizer, or having their form; because of existing prior to the three powers, or having their form; and so on. Here, the great mantra was prior; she alone is named Tripurā because her three seed syllables consist of paśyantī, madhyamā, and vaikharī. Here, the first [power of speech] is the unceasing reflective awareness of unlimited I-ness belonging to the Supreme Lord, who is the innermost self of all. The second consists of the reflective awareness of I-ness delimited by the body and so forth. The third consists of the reflective awareness of this-ness within one's own self, in objects such as blue and pleasure elsewhere than the bound cognizers of the body and so forth. The fourth consists of its expansion: such is the distinction. The non-statement "by three *pura*s" and the statement "by three *pada*s" is intended to recall scripture. The scripture beginning with "Speech is measured in four *pada*s" should be brought to mind here. In this hymn, the word *tripurā* denotes the deity. Elsewhere, it should be understood as denoting the mantra. || 1
