“First one should utter the root mantra; afterwards one should utter what is to be given; / then the recipient at the end of that; then the word signifying relinquishment. / In this sequence, O Ruler of the Gods, one should prepare the services.” / This is according to the maxim: “The performance of the act follows the mantra.” (4) / Then, taking a palmful of water: “Oṃ. Prior to this, through the form of the nature of breath, intellect, and body, in the waking, dreaming, and deep sleep states, whatever has been remembered, spoken, or done by mind, speech, the hands, feet, belly, and genitals—may all that be an offering to Brahman, svāhā; myself and all that is mine I properly surrender to such-and-such deity; oṃ tat sat.” / Or after the prostration. (5) / Then, having recited a thousand and eight or a hundred times: “Oṃ. You are the protector of the most secret of secrets; accept my recitation that has been performed; / may there be success for me, O God, through your grace, when you are present.” / Elsewhere the variation is “O Goddess, protector”. / Having thus surrendered the recitation, praised, and bowed, one should perform an eight-limbed prostration.
