Where fallen flowers in season cover the surface of the water, / in the wild river of swift torrent crowded with blossoms, / in the deep, rocky swirl where crocodiles sleep, / subduing the rut of an unmanageable elephant and drawing it down, / the dread flood sweeps— / daring it, fearless like a wild boar with fierce eyes, / crossing that terrifying, difficult ford at midnight, / should you come all this way, O lord of towering peaks? / If harm should befall you on a single day, on the following day / my friend will not go on living! / Even in places that are without danger, those who frequent them / will meet with misfortune without delay. Therefore, / we suffer agonizing grief. In our garden / along the high-ridged, long mountain where sweet honeycombs are built, / inside the beautiful copse of gloriosa lilies in the fruit-laden, dense woods, / if you come by day, you may embrace / the broad, soft shoulders—resembling the spaces between the joints / of curved bamboo from the wide mountain—which mother reared and cherished.
