'Following in our track with a heart that censures what was abandoned,
will you remember and think of me?'—so, indeed,
without letting the smile on your coral mouth with thorn-sharp teeth fade,
putting forth suffering, do not utter strange words;
would I ever forget your exquisite beauty? Far away,
where bright sparks showered by rubbing tall bamboos
ignited, hidden in fallen dry leaves, and whirled up by the wind
upon the tall, dry grass, a great fire seized the woods and ran everywhere,
so that a caravan screamed, having lost its path, alongside
a herd of maddened elephants terrified of an exuberant tiger,
wandering bewildered in that vast expanse of great wilderness;
as the blazing sun hung in the sky and grew dim, setting,
O woman of fragrant tresses drenched in unguents! thinking of you and remembering,
in that impassable passage where hard travel could not go on, all at once,
like a fawn lying on an expansive bed,
seeing you standing with cast-down eyes, bracelets slipping from your arms,
pensatively scratching the ground with your toe, I said:
'O woman of sweet smiles! Though we are thus, why
has sulking come upon us?' So, indeed,
stroking your arching brows and your rounded forehead,
and smoothing your fragrant hair in that blessed hour,
a dream that proved untrue showed only empty hands—
because you do not consider the longing and bewildered despair
that I endured, you sulk at me!
