One desirous of splendour, desirous of priestly lustre, should make the two concluding verses of the Sviṣṭakṛt in the gāyatrī metre.
The gāyatrī is splendour, priestly lustre.
Possessed of splendour, possessed of priestly lustre becomes he who, knowing thus, makes the two [verses] in the gāyatrī.
One desirous of long life should make [them] in the uṣṇih metre; life indeed is the uṣṇih.
He attains a full lifespan who, knowing thus, makes the two [verses] in the uṣṇih.
One desirous of the heavenly world should make [them] in the anuṣṭubh metre.
In two anuṣṭubhs there are sixty-four syllables; these three worlds above are each twenty-one-fold. By twenty-one and twenty-one he ascends these worlds; in the heavenly world alone he establishes himself by the sixty-fourth.
He establishes himself who, knowing thus, makes the two [verses] in the anuṣṭubh.
One desirous of prosperity, desirous of glory, should make [them] in the bṛhatī metre.
The bṛhatī is the prosperity and the glory of the metres.
Prosperity and glory he places in himself who, knowing thus, makes the two [verses] in the bṛhatī.
One desirous of sacrifice should make [them] in the paṅkti metre.
The sacrifice is fivefold (paṅkta).
The sacrifice inclines to him who, knowing thus, makes the two [verses] in the paṅkti.
One desirous of virility should make [them] in the triṣṭubh metre; the triṣṭubh is vital power, sensory power, and virility.
Possessed of vital power, possessed of sensory power, and possessed of virility becomes he who, knowing thus, makes the two [verses] in the triṣṭubh.
One desirous of cattle should make [them] in the jagatī metre.
Cattle belong to the jagatī.
Possessed of cattle becomes he who, knowing thus, makes the two [verses] in the jagatī.
One desirous of food should make [them] in the virāj metre; the virāj is food.
Therefore, he who has the most food here shines out (virājati) the most in the world; that is the virāj-nature of the virāj.
He shines out among his own; he becomes the best among his own, who knows thus.
