They go forth (upa prayanti) to the heavenly world by this, namely the prāyaṇīya (introductory rite);
that is the prāyaṇīya-nature of the prāyaṇīya.
The prāyaṇīya is the out-breath (prāṇa), the udayanīya (concluding rite) is the up-breath (udāna); the hotṛ priest is the same,
for out-breath and up-breath are equal, for the ordering of the breaths, for the discernment of the breaths.
The sacrifice departed from the gods;
those gods were unable to do anything, nor did they discern [anything].
They said to Aditi:
'Through you let us discern this sacrifice.'
She said, 'So be it; let me choose a boon from you.'
'Choose', [they said]. She chose this very boon:
'Let the sacrifices have their going forth (prāyaṇa) through me, and their concluding (udayana) through me.' 'So be it', [they said].
Therefore, the sacrificial porridge for Aditi is the prāyaṇīya, and the one for Aditi is the udayanīya, for it was chosen by her as a boon.
Moreover, she chose this boon:
'Through me alone shall you discern the eastern quarter, through Agni the southern,
through Soma the western, through Savitṛ the northern.'
He sacrifices to Pathyā.
In that he sacrifices to Pathyā, therefore yonder [sun] rises in the east and sets in the west;
for he moves along the path (pathyā).
He sacrifices to Agni.
In that he sacrifices to Agni, therefore in the south the plants come ripening first,
for plants belong to Agni.
He sacrifices to Soma.
In that he sacrifices to Soma, therefore to the west also many waters flow,
for waters belong to Soma. He sacrifices to Savitṛ.
In that he sacrifices to Savitṛ, therefore from the north-west this purifier (the wind) blows the most,
for impelled by Savitṛ he blows thus.
He sacrifices last to Aditi.
In that he sacrifices last to Aditi,
therefore yonder [sky] wets this [earth] with rain and smells [her].
He sacrifices to five deities; the sacrifice is fivefold.
All the quarters are ordered; the sacrifice is ordered, and it is ordered for that community where a hotṛ priest knowing thus is present.
