Prajāpati distributed the sacrifice, the metres, as portions among the gods.
He allotted the gāyatrī to Agni and the Vasus at the morning pressing,
the triṣṭubh to Indra and the Rudras at the midday [pressing],
and the jagatī to the All-Gods and the Ādityas at the third pressing.
Then the metre that was his own, the anuṣṭubh,
he thrust away to the conclusion, towards the achāvāka's [recitation].
The anuṣṭubh said to him: 'You are indeed the most wicked of the gods,
whose own metre I am,
[and yet] you have thrust me away to the conclusion, towards the achāvāka's [recitation]!'
He recognized that; he brought forth his own Soma [sacrifice].
In his own Soma [sacrifice] he brought the anuṣṭubh around towards the beginning, the mouth.
Therefore the anuṣṭubh is employed as the foremost, the chief, of all the pressings.
He becomes foremost and chief, he attains pre-eminence, who knows thus.
He indeed arranged that in his own Soma [sacrifice].
Therefore, wherever there is the will of the sacrificer, there the sacrifice also succeeds;
it succeeds for that community where a sacrificer, knowing thus and in control, offers sacrifice.
