They enclosed it with fire. The Maruts blew upon it; the fire did not make it stir.
They enclosed it with Agni Vaiśvānara. The Maruts blew upon it;
Agni Vaiśvānara made it stir.
What first flared up from that semen became that Āditya.
What was second became Bhṛgu.
Varuṇa took him to himself; therefore he is Bhṛgu Vāruṇi.
Then what seemed to shine third became the Ādityas.
Those that were coals became the Aṅgirases.
When the coals, having been extinguished, flared up again, that became Bṛhaspati.
Those which were charred remnants became black cattle;
what was red earth became red [cattle].
Then what was ashes crawled away in various forms:
the wild ox, the gavaya, the stag, the camel, the donkey, and those which are reddish cattle.
This god laid claim to them: 'Mine is this; mine is what is left on the site.'
They turned him away with this verse which is recited addressed to Rudra:
'May the favour of the father of the Maruts come to thee; do not separate us from the sight of the sun;
mayst thou, our hero, spare [us] in horseflesh!' [ṚV 2.33.1cd–2a].
He should say 'to us [naḥ]' and not 'against us [abhi naḥ]'; then this god does not harm his offspring.
'May we be born forth with offspring, O Rudriya' [ṚV 2.33.4c],
he should say, not 'O Rudra', so as to avoid this very name.
Moreover, he should recite with 'May he do welfare [śaṃ] for us';
he begins with 'welfare [śam]', for pacification in every respect.
'To men, to women, to cows' [ṚV 1.43.6cd]:
'men' are males, 'women' are females; [this is] for pacification in every respect.
It is unexpressed [aniruktā], addressed to Rudra, appeased, having full life, for the sake of obtaining full life;
he attains full life who knows thus.
It is in the gāyatrī metre. The gāyatrī is brahman; with brahman he thus pays homage to him.
