The gods took refuge in the agniṣṭoma, the Asuras in the ukthas. Being of equal virility, they did not separate. Bharadvāja among the ṛṣis saw them: 'These Asuras have taken refuge in the ukthas; none among them sees them.' He called aloud to Agni: 'Come well, let me speak to you, O Agni; other songs are of such a kind'; the other songs were indeed Asuric. Agni, rising up, said: 'What indeed will this thin, tall, grey-haired man say to me?' Bharadvāja was indeed thin, tall, and grey-haired. He said: 'These Asuras have taken refuge in the ukthas; none among you sees them.' Agni, having become a horse, ran up against them. Because Agni, having become a horse, ran up against them, that became the Sākamaśva sāman; that is the Sākamaśva-nature of the Sākamaśva. As to that, they say: 'One should introduce the ukthas with the Sākamaśva; unintroduced indeed are those ukthas which are [introduced] elsewhere than with the Sākamaśva.' 'One should introduce them with the Pramaṃhiṣṭhīya,' they say; 'with the Pramaṃhiṣṭhīya indeed the gods drove the Asuras from the ukthas.' Therefore he should introduce them with the Pramaṃhiṣṭhīya, and bring them forth with the Sākamaśva.
