As they found breath, the rakṣases pursued them. Singing this very sāman, he protected them. Because singing he protected them, that is the Gāyatra's nature as Gāyatra. It protects from all evil the one who knows this. It should be sung upward, as it were. The heavenly world is upward. [It is] for the attainment of the heavenly world. It should be sung with three turns. Three, indeed, are these worlds. [It is] for the attainment of these worlds. It should be sung with three breath-pauses. Three, indeed, are out-breath, in-breath, and diffused breath. [It is] for their continuity. Out-breath, in-breath, and diffused breath are continuously extended for him who knows this. It should be sung with three turns. Three, indeed, are these worlds. [It is] for the continuity of these worlds. These worlds are continuously extended for him who knows this.
