That [sāman] should be sung on its own pole [track], as it were neither too loud nor too soft.
If one should sing too loud, one would walk upon the path of a superior rival;
if one should sing too soft, one would walk upon the path of an inferior rival.
This [earth] indeed is its pole, this atmosphere [is its span].
It injures him just so, whoever injures one who knows thus.
Regarding this they say: 'By a span’s measure it does not touch this world, nor by a span’s measure that one.'
Moreover they say: 'By just the measure of the caul of a newly calved cow it does not touch this world, nor by so much that one.'
Moreover they say: 'By just the measure of the caul around the dung it does not touch this world, nor by so much that one.'
It should be sung by one who reflects thus.
And moreover they say: 'Just as two wheels are braced by an axle-pin, so are these two worlds braced by this [sāman].
It neither touches this world, nor that one.'
One must not sing following along another’s track.
He who sings following along another’s track is liable to become a dependent.
It must be sung strictly on its own pole.
Whoever knows the honey of the gods becomes possessed of honey.
The Vāmadevya is indeed the honey of the gods.
Possessed of honey becomes he who knows thus.
