One who is practicing sorcery or who has a rival should perform the seven-day rite of Jamadagni.
Jamadagni was the domestic priest of the Mahenas.
He surpassed them in wealth.
They attacked and harmed him.
He reflected: 'How now might I destroy of these [people] seven by seven domestic animals in one day?'
He saw this sāman.
He praised with it.
Then, indeed, he destroyed of these [people] seven by seven domestic animals in one day.
In this very way they now destroy [the domestic animals] of these [enemies].
That is a slayer of rivals.
He slays his hating rival who knows thus.
And since Jamadagni saw it, therefore it is called the seven-day rite of Jamadagni.
Concerning this, the following verse is sung:
'They grew excessively, they did not touch heaven, / having harmed the Bhṛgu, the Mahenas suffered an irreparable defeat.'
Thus.
Indeed, an irreparable defeat suffers he who harms one who knows thus.
