That [sāman] ends with the iḷā-call. / The iḷā is cattle. / Truly by means of cattle they drove them away. / Therefore, when two rivals, one with cattle and one without cattle, contend, the one who has cattle overcomes the other. / This sāman, indeed, spreads out along these creatures. / At the end they approach this extended iḷā, so that creatures are not uprooted from their proper abode. / Therefore, creatures are not uprooted from their proper abode. / The gods, the fathers, and humans were on one side; the asuras, the rakṣases, and the piśācas were on the other side. / They contended for these worlds. / Now the Kali Gandharvas roamed in between, paying heed neither to the one nor to the other. / Those gods, fathers, and humans overcame the asuras, the rakṣases, and the piśācas. / They divided these worlds among themselves: the gods took the world of the gods, the fathers the world of the fathers, and humans the world of humans. / The Kali Gandharvas came to them and said, 'Allot to us [a share] in these worlds!' / They said, 'No! / You roamed about paying heed to neither, paying heed neither to the one nor to the other.' / 'Now indeed we were entering into you with our mind,' they said; 'do allot to us [a share]!'
