When Prajāpati distributed the bodies to the gods, that which possessed bay steeds (harivatī) he kept for himself. He gave it to Indra. By it Indra attained supremacy. Because they praise on the verses containing the word 'hari', that is supremacy. The verses containing the word 'hari' indirectly amount to the Anuṣṭubh. When praised, they become thirty-four syllables. Then they say that through those two thirty-fourth syllables of the sāman, the world is established. If they were to praise on thirty-five syllables, they would attain the higher Bārhat form. If they were to praise on thirty-three syllables, they would attain the lower Ānuṣṭubh form. If it were a seventeenfold stoma, they would attain the highest form. If it were a fifteenfold stoma, they would attain the lowest form. When they praise with the Ṣoḍaśin on thirty-four syllables with a sixteenfold stoma, they make him prosper by his own abode. Through this, made prosperous, he flourishes among his own people. There are sixteen stotras and sixteen śastras. That is thirty-two. The Anuṣṭubh has thirty-two syllables. The Ṣoḍaśin, being of the Anuṣṭubh meter, has attained the Anuṣṭubh. The meters of the gods were one kind, the meters of the Asuras were another.
