Driven away from the day, the asuras entered the night.
Those gods saw these sāmans, these nocturnal rounds.
With them they marched down against them.
They struck them round by round (paryāya).
Because they struck them round by round, that is the nocturnal-roundness of the nocturnal rounds.
He strikes his hateful rival round by round, who knows thus.
Those who were covered by the early part of the night, them they struck with the first nocturnal round.
In that the first words of the first nocturnal round are repeated at the beginning, those who are covered by the early part of the night, them they strike thereby.
Those who were covered by midnight, them they struck with the middle nocturnal round.
In that the middle words of the middle nocturnal round are repeated at the beginning, those who are covered by midnight, them they strike thereby.
Those who were covered by the latter part of the night, them they struck with the final nocturnal round.
In that the final words of the final nocturnal round are repeated at the beginning, those who are covered by the latter part of the night, them they strike thereby.
They struck them indeed by striking them again and again.
Just as if, having struck, one were to strike again, such was that.
He strikes his hateful rival again and again, who knows thus.
