Belonging to Rudra in the cow, to Vāyu when let loose [to the calf], to the Aśvins while being milked, to Agni and Soma when milked, belonging to Pūṣan are the drops of froth, to Mitra the film of cream, to Varuṇa when set upon [the fire], to Viṣṇu while being settled in place, to the All-Gods when scooped up, to Savitṛ when stepped forward, to Heaven and Earth when set down [near the fire], to Indra and Agni is the first oblation, to Prajāpati the second.
Thus this fire-offering is seventeenfold.
Seventeenfold indeed is the Vājapeya.
He who, knowing thus, performs the fire-offering, conquers both worlds: that of the fire-offering sacrificer and that of the Vājapeya sacrificer.
'There are three stumps in the fire-offering,' Śāṇḍilya used to say.
That he offers upon an unkindled stick, that is a stump;
that he misses it, that is a stump;
that he lets the two [oblations] run together, that is a stump.
He offers upon a blazing stick directly into the flame.
Stepping over [the first], he offers the second oblation.
He thrives with seventeen thousandfold nourishments upon seventeen, who, knowing thus, performs the fire-offering.
