They said, 'We have indeed become well-sacrificed (sumedhyāḥ).' That is the reason why the Saumedha sāman is called Saumedha. He who knows this becomes pure and fit for sacrifice. They also call it the Paurvatitha. Pūrvatithi Ārcanānasa was younger than Śyāvāśva. He desired, 'May I obtain cattle; may I reach an abundance of cattle.' He saw this sāman. With it he praised: 'May he come indeed, if he hears, with aids bringing thousands!' He indeed obtained a thousand cattle; he reached an abundance of cattle. This is a sāman that brings cattle. He who knows this obtains cattle, he reaches an abundance of cattle. And because Pūrvatithi Ārcanānasa saw it, therefore it is called Paurvatitha. The verses are in the Uṣṇih meter: 'Indra, in the pressed somas.' A stronghold of the gods is that which the Uṣṇih verses are. In that they are performed at the end, they lead around a stronghold of the gods at the end for the protection of cattle, so that the Asuras cannot attack.
