The Agniṣṭoma:
Agni is procreative light among the deities; the Virāj is the light among the meters; the Virāj is the light of speech.
It concludes in Agni;
it attains the Virāj;
therefore this is called light.
Two stomas carry the morning pressing, just as the eye and breath do; thus it is.
Two stomas carry the midday pressing, just as the ear and the arms do; thus it is.
Two stomas carry the third pressing, just as the middle and the firm foundation do; thus it is.
With the sound hiṃ as light, the gods placed light into the ninefold [stoma] for spiritual luster;
with the ninefold [stoma] as spiritual luster, they placed light into the fifteenfold [stoma] for force and vital power;
with the fifteenfold [stoma] as force and vital power, they placed light into the seventeenfold [stoma] for offspring, for cattle, for procreation;
with the seventeenfold [stoma] for offspring, cattle, and procreation, they placed light into the twenty-onefold [stoma] for a firm foundation.
Stoma indeed proceeds placing light into stoma;
therefore it is named Jyotiṣṭoma.
And because stoma leads forward stoma and the pressing, therefore it is named Jyotiṣṭoma.
Moreover, because the sacrifice when chanted attains the Virāj, and the Virāj is light, therefore it is named Jyotiṣṭoma.
