Āditya was here in the beginning, where this pit (cātvāla) is, and fire was yonder. / He burned scorching all this. / The gods feared his burning up. / They said: 'He will burn up all this; let us interchange these two.' / Him they took from here with three [verses], with three through the intermediate space, with three they made him reach the sky. / He burned from there turned away. / They saw this highest syllable beginning with ā. / With it they turned him facing hither. / Thence he burns here facing hither. / With the syllable beginning with ṣa they established fire in this world. / If he desires of a sacrificer, 'May he belong to the heavenly world,' / he should sing looking down upon the pit (cātvāla). / Him they take from here with three [verses], with three through the intermediate space, with three they make him reach the sky. / They should always praise with all [verses]; then he should recite the highest first, then the lower, then the lower. / All these [become] turned toward [this world]. / And they say regarding this: 'Indeed, this is descending, for he sacrifices desiring heaven.' / In that yonder syllable beginning with ā is the highest, thereby he is not cut off from this world.
