“Flow, leader of speech”: one desiring preeminence should make this the opening verse. / Prajāpati created creatures. / Having been created, they did not respect him. / He desired: “May I attain preeminence over these creatures.” / He saw this opening verse. / He praised with it. / Thereupon he attained preeminence over those creatures. / He who knows thus attains preeminence over his own people. / That stotriyā verse is indeed complete whose beginning is “Flow.” / With a complete stotriyā verse praise is performed for him. / Whoever knows the divine pair is propagated as a pair. / “Flow” and “of speech” are the divine pair. / He who knows thus is propagated as a pair. / This is the opening verse of all three sāmans: “Flow” belongs to the Vāmadevya, “of speech” to the Rathantara, “leader” to the Bṛhat. / Praise is performed for him with an opening verse belonging to all the sāmans. / “O Soma, with wonderful aids”: Soma, indeed, is the wonder of the gods; by Soma, the wonder of the gods, he becomes manifold and is propagated. / “Towards all poetic wisdoms”: by this he secures all poetic wisdom.
