One should make a [verse] addressed to Agni and Varuṇa the introductory verse for one who is sick, who is chronically sick.
He who is sick, who is chronically sick, is seized by Agni [and] by Varuṇa.
By means of Agni they release him from that which pertains to Agni; by means of Varuṇa from that which pertains to Varuṇa.
One who desires to bring [something] to himself should make that verse the introductory verse in which a shorter [meter follows] upon a longer verse, or a longer [meter] upon a shorter [verse].
Thinking, 'He will obtain the shorter by means of the longer,' [or] the longer by means of the shorter,
he obtains the longer by means of the shorter, who knows thus.
He who desires, 'May I alone be the best among my own people; may I attain brilliance,' should make: 'This god is immortal...' the introductory verse.
By saying, 'This, this,' [the verse] addresses him for primacy, for preeminence.
He becomes the best among his own people; he attains brilliance.
Yet his subsequent offspring is liable not to be born as such a hero.
For speech addresses him, as it were: 'This one alone, none other than he.'
Now, on the other hand, this is not so.
For [the verse] says: 'The god is immortal.'
Indeed, he who, being a hero, does not have a heroic, vigorous [son] born [to him] is both non-divine and mortal.
Now he alone indeed is divine, he is immortal, who, being a hero, has a heroic, vigorous [son] born [to him].
To him, being a hero, a heroic, vigorous [son] is born; he is connected with offspring, he is not cut off.
