Being created, they ran away from him.
He wished to enclose them with the Agniṣṭoma;
they ran beyond it.
He wished to enclose them with the Ukthya;
they ran beyond it.
He wished to enclose them with the Ṣoḍaśin;
they ran beyond that too.
He went round and round them with the rounds.
Because he went round and round them with the rounds, that is the roundness of the rounds.
He encompassed them with the Āśvina rite.
When they had been encompassed, just as small fish might slip through the mesh of a net, so indeed whatever cattle were small slipped through.
He desired: "Having reached them, may I hold them fast in myself."
He saw these four chants beyond the night.
He chanted with them.
Having reached them with them, he held them fast in himself.
Because having reached (āptvā) [them] he held them fast, therefore it is the Aptoryāma.
Or because, reaching them, as it were, through the portion of soma, he extends [the sacrifice], therefore it is the Aptoryāma.
