With this very rite Udara Śāṇḍilya desired to sacrifice.
It was in his mind alone: 'I would sacrifice with the Ekatrika.'
He did not speak to anyone.
Now his wife was possessed by a gandharva.
A gandharva approached her.
He said to her, 'There is a sacrificial rite called Ekatrika, quite terrible.
With it your husband is going to sacrifice.'
She asked her husband, 'There is a sacrificial rite called Ekatrika, quite terrible.
Is it true that you will sacrifice with it?'
He said, 'Since I did not speak of this to anyone, it was in my mind alone, who told you this?'
'The gandharva who approaches me,' she said.
'Do ask him,' he said,
'"Should one sacrifice with it, or should one not sacrifice with it?"'
She asked him, 'Should one sacrifice with it, or should one not sacrifice with it?'
He said, 'As he knows it, so we know it.
But whoever knows its stotra in this way—as Prajāpati praised with it yonder—he may sacrifice with it.'
Therefore he did not dare to sacrifice [with it].
