Just as one, having set fire to an old thicket, might sprinkle it with waters, [and] fine herbs would sprout upon it, [and] cattle would thrive upon them, even so indeed all cattle thrive upon him.
His opening verse is the verse addressed to Agni Pāvamāna: 'O Agni, you purify our life-spans.'
About this they say: 'Indeed, those who begin with verses to Pavamāna are deprived of these breaths.'
As to that, because this verse addressed to Agni Pāvamāna is the opening verse, Vāyu indeed is breath; thereby they provide [him] fully with the breaths.
'O Agni, purifying by brilliance'—purifying food indeed is food; with food-sustenance indeed they thus provide him fully.
Moreover, the purifier is Vāyu; breath is Vāyu; in regular order indeed they thus provide him fully with the breaths.
'Agni of purest vows'—impure, as it were, indeed becomes he who is accused falsely.
Pure indeed, cleansed [and] sacrificial do they make him by this.
His verses for the midday Pavamāna are the Bṛhatī verses: 'Sacrifice upon sacrifice to your Agni.'
Indeed, they cast him into fire whom they cause to sacrifice with the Agniṣṭut.
'And the protector of bodies'—thereby the sacrificer entrusts his own body to Agni Vaiśvānara.
His Rathantara-pṛṣṭha is upon these verses of Nṛmedha: 'Protect us, O Agni, with the single one.'
By these, indeed, Nṛmedha Auśija drove away the burning heats of fire.
He drives away the burning heats of fire by these.
His Agniṣṭoma-sāman is upon these verses addressed to Apāṃ Napāt: 'May the divine [waters] be favorable to our aid.'
The waters indeed are addressed to Apāṃ Napāt.
Indeed, they cast him into fire whom they cause to sacrifice with the Agniṣṭut.
